MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

MAX!BBS

INTRODUCTION

MAX!BBS is a host system, written in the SALT-language for use
with TELIX as the major communication program. With TELIX
outstanding capabilities, MAX!BBS is capable to use many common
features as can be found on professional Bulletin Board Systems.

MAX!BBS is indispensable when you need to run a small BBS-system
with speed and simplicity as your priority.

This release of MAX!BBS is a non-beta release. I have tried to
install most common features to run a small BBS-system. All
intro's, closing's, bulletin & file messages and other screen
lay-out's can easily be converted into home-made ANSI files, so
you can create your own designs or logo's to identify your BBS to
callers.

There are no external mailers connected to it or any other
advanced features , as can often be found on most professional
BBS - systems (undoubtedly features for a future release).
Mail can be sent, answered and received by all BBS-users.
It's edit-function is very simple, but what the hell..it works
(it has wordwrap though).

As for reason that I have not the privilege of owning a color
display system, some colors might come out beyond reasonable
acceptance. I hope this will be fixed when I have the means to
do so.

For the sake of speedness MAX!BBS uses only HOT-KEYS to access
window-items and due to TELIX excellent communication program,
MAX!BBS is FAST! and by it's simplicity very user-friendly. Every
item is just a key-stroke away!!

The author hopes that you will enjoy running this BBS as much as
he enjoyed writing it.

RUNNING MAX!BBS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

GENERAL
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

MAX!BBS is a host system created by TELIX SALT language. Once it
is installed it will automatically detect an incoming call and
proceed with the routines for which it is designed.
MAX!BBS uses only HOT-KEY performance for speed access to all
items available and fully supports ANSI screens!

FIRST TIME INSTALLATION
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

1. Make sure that you include in your CONFIG.SYS the line:

DEVICE = ANSI.SYS

2. If you are using a fossildriver please include a second line:

DEVICE = X00.SYS E

3. Include your MAX!BBS-directory in your DOS-path by editing
your AUTOEXEC.BAT (e.g. path = c:\max!bbs)

4. Also if you install a watchdog for carrier like 'XU.EXE'
(comes with the program X00.SYS from Raymond L.Gwinn) than you
must put on the last line of your AUTOEXEC.BAT the proper
commands to call MAX!BBS after a reboot due to carrier-loss.

(autoexec.bat)
|
|
cd\max!bbs
telix smax!bbs
-

Copyright (c) 1990,1991 by Max de Jong Page: 9

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

PROGRAM INSTALLATION
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

Copy the following files to your TELIX-directory:

1. MAX!BBS.SLC (Main Host program)
2. MAX!CONF.SLC (Host Configuration program)
3. MAX!ED.SLC (User Editor)

Copy ALL ANSI-files supplied by MAX!BBS.

MAX!BBS can then be invoked by typing the following command line
at the DOS prompt:

TELIX Smax!bbs

where the 'S' in front of 'max!bbs' is the way TELIX calls a
script-file to activate. For your convenience I have added a
simple batchfile with the above line (MAX!BBS.BAT).

If all goes well and no irregularities are found MAX!BBS will
automatically jump to it's configuration menu if no configuration
file could be found (MAX!BBS.CNF).

This file will be automatically created after installing your
desired parameters, like paths for your Up-/Download, Message and
Door sections.
Also you can install the titles for your bulletins and file lists
per section and each time limit for every level (4).
Doorways can be installed including your favourite editor and
lister and even the program AVAILIST from Andrew Farmer, if you
wish to use this excellent filelist generator.

If you would like to change the configuration (i.e. add more
bulletin or file titles) than you can always switch to your
configuration menu by pressing the 'C'-key from your main menu.

Option 'U' for Utilities
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This is the FIRST SELECTION you have to make!
This option allows you to install your favourite File Editor,
File Lister, Virus Scanner (SCAN from McAffee as default) and
optionally AVAILIST (filelist generator).

Please type in the full pathname, plus filename WITH EXTENSION!

e.g. C:\UTILS\Q.EXE your File Editor
C:\UTILS\LIST.COM your File Lister
C:\UTILS\SHEZ.EXE shell to scan for virusses
C:\UTILS\AVAILIST.EXE for AvaiList
C:\UTILS\DOORWAY.EXE for Doors
C:\UTILS\AICHAT.EXE external chat program

After that your configuration program asks if you will be using
external protocols. If so put 'Y' else 'N'. MAX!BBS will look for
this answer whether to show the extended ANSI-file with

('PROT-E.ANS' shows external protocols)

Please make sure you to put these two ANSI-files in your major
COMM-directory where MAX!BBS resides.
After that go through all options SEQUENTLY.

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

Option 'P' for Passwords
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This allows you to protect remote shelling and shutdown of the
system, by forcing the user to provide a password.

Option 'D' for Directories
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This option will pop-up a window in which you can provide the
paths to:
1. DOWNLOAD-directory
2. UPLOAD -directory
3. MESSAGE -directory
4. DOORS -directory

After you have typed the full pathnames, all directories will be
created automatically.

Option 'T' for Titles and Sections
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
1. Bulletin titles
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
After having typed in your Bulletin title, your program will
try to detect if the accompanying file ('BULL.x') exists.
If not it will ask if you wish to create it.
By answering 'Y' it will directly drop you into your Editor to
create the Bulletin file with the appropiate filename.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR EDITOR IS CAPABLE TO ACCEPT
FILENAMES ON THE COMMAND LINE! (e.g. "Q.EXE filename.ext")

If the file was already created, the program asks if you want
to either [L]ist, [T]ype or make changes with [E]dit.

2. File sections
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Here you can put in the File-titles related to their sub-
directories (File-sections).
- First pick a section number.
- Type in the Title-name for this File-section.
- Then the program asks for the name of the sub-directory in
which to look for the appropiate files.

ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ WARNING ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
PLEASE PROVIDE ONLY A NAME FOR THIS SUB-DIRECTORY!
NO DRIVE-LETTERS OR OTHER PATHNAMES ARE ACCEPTED!
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

If the sub-directory does not exist, it will be created
automatically. These sub-directories MUST BE created by
running this Configuration program ('MAX!CONF').

DO NOT! create these sub-directories yourself by means of by-
passing the Configuration program. This Configuration program
will create all sub-directories automatically, just by
answering all menu-items in the Configuration Menu.

Copyright (c) 1990,1991 by Max de Jong Page: 12

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

After that it will try to look for the matching file-list
('FILE.x'). If it exists, again it allows you to either
[L]ist, [T]ype or make changes with [E]dit and if not found it
will remind you to place files in that sub-directory first to
be able to create a filelist (see option F4 - do File Updates)

MAX!BBS will also create exact duplicate sub-directories in
your 'UPLOAD'-directory. This is needed to make uploads from
users much easier to find by inviting the user first to point
in which file-section his upload is appropiate to place in and
after that to give a brief description of the uploaded file.

MAX!BBS will then place his file in the chosen file-section
and automatically updates two files called 'UPLOADS.NEW' and
'FILES.BBS' in the same 'UPLOAD'-subdirectory.

The file 'UPLOADS.NEW' will be used to update the files:

'FILE.1' thru 'FILE.9'

(within the 'DOWNLOAD-directory)

The file 'FILES.BBS' will be used to update each duplicate
sub-directory placed in the 'DOWNLOAD'-directory with its own
file: 'FILES.BBS'.

This has been done to make MAX!BBS more compatible with most
of the file-list generators, used on many Bulletin Board
Systems, who are looking for the listfiles 'FILES.BBS'.

3. Door-sections
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This option allows you to create titles for all nine DOORS.
If you are not familiar with DOORS, you can skip this option.
If you want to use this option, you must have installed the
program "DOORWAY.EXE" from Marshall Dudley, otherwise this
option won't work. DOORS are an excellent way to provide your
callers with almost any program available for DOS and running
them remotely.

After typing in the DOOR-title, the program will check if the
batch-file (DOOR1.BAT - DOOR9.BAT) exists and if not allows
you to create one. All DOOR batch-files will be placed in the
DOOR-directory created by option 'D' for Directories.

If you have installed DOORWAY.EXE, the file: RSHELL.BA! (that
comes with the MAX!BBS-package) has to be renamed into
RSHELL.BAT to enable MAX!BBS to call for it when remote
shelling has been requested.

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

Option 'L' for Levels (time limits)
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This option allows you to install the maximum time allowed for
each level.
Level 5 is only obtained by the SysOp and gives almost unlimited
access & time to the system.

DO NOT RELEASE THIS LEVEL TO ANYONE ELSE!!

Option 'C' for Connection type
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Normally this option will show 'Modem' for default type of
connection. You can use 'Direct' when two P.C.'s are connected
by means of a 'null' modem cable and still want to use MAX!BBS as
transfer medium. All features of MAX!BBS are also available in
'Direct' mode. The only exception is that you can't use any of
the external protocols to make proper file-transfer (due to
carrier detection). However all internal protocols can be called
for to do file-transfers.

F2 - User Editor
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This function-key calls for the User Editor
(see section User Editor).

F3 - Scan for virusses
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
This function-key allows you to scan for virusses in all the
UPLOAD-directories (installed by the 'T' option for Titles).
Besides SHEZ.EXE, you need SCAN.EXE to let this function work.

F4 - do File Updates
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
After a period, you can call the 'do File Updates'-function by
pressing the 'F2'-key from within the Configuration Menu and your
download sections will be automatically updated with the
appropiate upload-files and your file-lists ('FILE.1 - FILE.9')
will be updated with the names of the newly received files with
their descriptions.

Also MAX!BBS generates a file-list called "NEWFILES.LST" in the
'DOWNLOAD'-directory with a list of the new uploaded files and a
filelist called "NEWFILES.LST" with a complete list of all
available files in the download areas.

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

If you have installed 'AVAILIST' as your favourite file-list
generator (good choice!) the files "ALLFILES.LST" and
"NEWFILES.LST" will be automatically created including the titles
of each file-section.
You don't have to worry about making a configuration file for
AVAILIST. MAX!BBS will generate the config-file (AVALIST.CFG)
for AVAILIST automatically! Of course you can change some
parameters in this file to your own standards.

FIRST TIME INSTALLATION DOWNLOAD REQUESTABLE FILES
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
To avoid wasting time to fill up your download-sections for the
very first time, please take the following steps:
1. Go to your UPLOAD-directory
2. Place your files in the appropiate sub-directories
3. Run 'File Update' (F4) from within your Configuration Menu

MAX!BBS will now look if any files are placed in each UPLOAD sub-
directory. If files were found, it will do the following:
1. generates automatically a sorted file-list of all the files in
that particular sub-directory.
2. it will then allow you to make any changes in this file-list
by calling your File Editor.
3. after that, it moves all files to their duplicate sub-
directories in your DOWNLOAD-directory and updates the
following files:

FILES.BBS (file list needed to run AVAILIST)
FILE.1 - FILE.9 (for each file section)
ALLFILES.LST (total list of all available files)
NEWFILES.LST (list of new uploads made available now)

MAX!BBS does this all automatically while you can sit back
and relax.

PERIODIC FILE UPDATES (UPLOADS)
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
If after a period of time you wish to update the DOWNLOAD file-
sections with new uploaded files from users, just call option
File Updates (F4) from within your Configuration Menu and all
updates will be done full automatically.

FILE UPDATES LOCALLY
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
If you want to update your DOWNLOAD file-sections, just make sure
that your UPLOAD-directories has been cleaned previously by
calling the option 'File Updates' from within your Configuration
Menu (run this option again if not sure).
After that you can repeat the steps already laid out in the
'First time installation' routine for 'download requestable
files'.

REMEMBER...MAX!BBS uses HOT-keys!
Just press the desired key and the option will pop-up.

LEVELS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍ

In order to control time consuming of users, you can limit access
time by selecting levels for each users. First-time users always
start with level-1. After verification, you can decide if his
access-time can be raised or not by simply edit the file
"MAX!BBS.PAS" and change his level. The file "MAX!BBS.PAS" will
hold the following information of each user:

MAX!BBS.PAS - The format for each line is:

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄ¿

Each level has been limited in both time and accessibility.

TIME ACCESS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

The time limit of each level can be configured from the
configuration menu ("MAX!CONF.SLC").

The default of each level is:

Level-1 15 minutes
Level-2 30 minutes
Level-3 45 minutes
Level-4+ 60 minutes

FILE ACCESS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Access to the file sections are limited also by levels.
These limits can not be changed and are fixed in the program.

Level-1 Up to file-section 4 Only Uploads/no Downloads
Level-2 Up to file-section 6 Up- en Downloads
Level-3 Up to file-section 8 Up- en Downloads
Level-4+ Up to file-section 9 Up- en Downloads

Level-5 users are not restricted in downloading only from the
Download-directory. They can give pathnames to access also files
anywhere on the disk (SO BE CAREFULL!)

Because MAX!BBS supports the Bimodem-protocol, the minimum level
to permit using this protocol is level-2.

Furthermore MAX!BBS permits users not only to view archived
files, but also to Xtract some or all files from within the
archive. After Xtraction, MAX!BBS allows the user to 're-
archive' the Xtracted files into the filename 'TEMP.XXX' for
downloading.
The minimum level needed for the Xtract-feature is level-3.

DOORWAY ACCESS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
These limits for each level are:

Level-1 Up to Doorway 4
Level-2 Up to Doorway 6
Level-3 Up to Doorway 8
Level-4+ Up to Doorway 9

BULLETIN ACCESS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
These limits for each level are:

Level-1 Up to Bulletin 4
Level-2 Up to Bulletin 6
Level-3 Up to Bulletin 8
Level-4+ Up to Bulletin 9

MAIL ACCESS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The mail area has no limitations than only the 'Locked' mail
feature. This feature is only for those who are blessed with
level-3. 'Locked' mail can only be read when the receiver knows
the key to 'Unlock' mail that was sent to him.

This feature was implemented solely for the purpose of having a
possibility to protect messages remotely against users who have
succeeded in getting your password to log in.

All other mail options are accessible to everyone.

Level-4 is normally given to the SysOp or his Co-SysOps.
As the major SysOp, you can however give yourself Level-5.

If you have level-5, MAX!-BBS does not ask for passwords in case
of remote DOS-access (SHELL) but allows you to go directly into
the DOS-shell. Also there are no restrictions given in
downloading files anywhere on your harddisk. Nonetheless, level-4
users have almost unlimited access to your system.

ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

The first thing you have to do is put your name FIRST in the
file "MAX!BBS.PAS". The normal way to do this is to change the
first user in the password-file with the User-Editor. As a
default, MAX!BBS always writes one line in the password-file with
the author's data as User #1, when no password-file can be found.
You can change this with your own data and raise your level UP TO
THE MAX!

FIRST LOG-IN
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

Users are allowed to log-in with an alias (username).
It's use is popular enough to implement this option.

MAX!BBS tolerates equal usernames from different users.

New callers will not be refused when typing in names which are
already in use by other callers. After a registered user calls
in, and has typed in the requested name, MAX!BBS will check if
this name is already on file, and if so, offer the caller all
corresponding names and let the user decide which name is the
appropiate one.

Now for those who hate to wait, you can also log-in with your
Usernumber instead of your Username. This will make Search &
Find process much faster than typing in your name. You avoid
forcing MAX!BBS check for more comparisons with your name after
validating you as a known user. Also handy for sending mail to
users with equal names, for a user# is unique in contrary to
usernames.

If you have problems remembering numbers, you can always press
'?' for a complete userlist or to search for Names or Cities
before logging in. This option is also available within the MAIN
MENU (MailBox).

First time users are automatically restricted to level-1
accessibilities. After proper registration, you can allow them
more time & access on your Board.

The questionnaire looks as follows:

MENU OPTIONS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

All menu-options speaks for themselves.

After a caller logs in (or in testmode) he can easily orient
himself what keys to press in order to get the desired option.
When in doubt, he still can press the 'H'-key in order to get on-
line Help, how to use the options.
You can alter the file called "HELP.ANS" to add more instructions
for user's convenience.
To go back to previous menu's, simply press [ENTER] or '-' key.

DOORWAY SECTION
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

When the user activates this option, a window with all
Doorway-titles will appear on his screen. MAX! BBS will look at
his level to find out which Doorways he is allowed to enter and
which not (see limits per level). Doorway- titles can be created
by entering the titles within the configuration program of
MAX!BBS. You have to create batch-files "DOOR1.BAT - DOOR9.BAT"
in your DOORS-directory, releated to the Doorway-titles which you
have prepared in the configuration menu.

To make DOOR applications work, you need the DOORWAY program by
Marshall Dudley. With this program you can even make sub-menu's
into one batchfile, so the number of DOORS are not limited to
only nine. For a full understanding about installing DOORS,
please consult the DOORWAY-manual of Marhall Dudley's excellent
DOORWAY program.

BULLETIN SECTION
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

When the user activates this option, a window with all
bulletin-titles will appear on his screen. MAX! BBS will look at
his level to find out which bulletins he is allowed to look at
and which not (see limits per level). Bulletin-titles can be
created by entering the titles within the configuration program
of MAX! BBS. You have to create the files "BULL.1 - BULL.9"
according to the titles with your own editor, otherwise MAX!-BBS
will create an error report, reminding you that these files are
not present.

You can self-create its contents or use
a professional file-list generator like
'AVAILIST' from Andrew D. Farmer.

[N]ew files - This option will list the file
"NEWFILES.LST". This file will be generated
by MAX!BBS automatically when the 'do File
Update'-function is called for from within
the Configuration menu (F2).
Afterwards you can self-define its contents.
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Both files MUST remain in your DOWNLOAD
sub-directory to let MAX!BBS list it.
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Of course it would place a touch of magic
when you put some ANSI graphics into it.
TheDraw is probably your favorite program
to do it with.

[L]ist file-sections - This option will produce a window with
the file-titles you have created with the
MAX! BBS configuration program (file.1 -
file.9) Don't forget to create these
files, otherwise MAX! BBS will create an
error report to help you remind that
these files are not present.

[T]ype a file (ASCII) - This option allows the user to list an
ASCII-file. Filename and extension must
be typed in to do a proper listing.
All ASCII-files to be typed must reside in
your 'DOWNLOAD'-directory.

[V]iew ARCHIVES - This option allows the user to view ARC-
files before deciding to download it.
The following ARCHIVES can be listed:
(ZIP / ARC / LZH / ZOO / PAK / ARJ).
Of course you must have these programs in
your path to make use of this feature.

[X]tract files - This option allows the user to Xtract
files within an ARCHIVE, when he does not
need all the files within the ARCHIVE to
download. Due to the variety of ARCHIVE-
types, I have limited this option to only
the very popular ones (see above).

*NOTE ON ARJ-COMPRESSION*
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Due to memory limitations, Xtracted files can only be stored with the
'-m0' switch, so actually files will only be grouped together in one
'ARJ'-file. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but 'ARJ' consumes
nearly 300 kb of memory and in combination with TELIX and the MAX!BBS
script-file it is beyond the 640 kb limit normally on board by most
computers (or you must be fortunated enough to have additional
memory which can be called for).

[D]ownload files - This option allows the user to enter the
Download section. Files may be downloaded
in a batch (if supported by the protocol).
After the requested filenames are entered,
the following window will appear:

message.

[S]end private mail - This option allows you to send mail to
every user available on the system. If
you don't remember the name of the user
you wish to send a message, do not worry.
MAX! BBS has a 'search & find' option to
let you trace the user you're looking
for.
Just press the '?'-key and you have the
option to look for [N]ames or for
[C]ities. You are allowed to abbreviate
your input, e.g. "AM" will produce a list
of all the names beginning with "AM".
To speed up searching, you can also type
in the Usernumber instead of the
Username. This will cut off the search
sequence and give you directly the right
user to send your message to.
When you enter a "Name" , MAX! BBS will
automatically present you the first
"Name" that compares with your input.
Type in "Y" to proceed or "N" when the
presented "Name" does not match. MAX!
BBS will go to the next matching "Name"
until found.

[P]ublic messages - This option will create the file

directory. It is accessible to anyone.

[L]ist Users - This option allows you to look for any
Users that are registered into the
system. This feature can also be called
within the option to [S]end private mail.
You are allowed to search for [N]ames or

If you have toggled the CHAT MODE to 'ON' (F5-key toggles
ON/OFF), callers can have a chat session with you. In the Main
menu, callers can see if you are available for a chat or not. If
they can not get in touch with you on-line, MAX! BBS give them
the opportunity to leave a message for you as the SysOp of the
system.

GOODBYE
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

This, of course, will end the session of the caller and
gives the user a last chance to leave a message to the SysOp.
After that MAX!BBS returns to it's Stand-By Mode for new callers.
You can change your Good-bye message in your own style ("BYE.ANS").

MAX!BBS uses the normal DOS CTTY-command in re-routing to DOS.
This command has its limitations though. You need a watchdog
and a fossil driver to watch carrier when it drops.
Try the program DOORWAY.EXE (written by Marshall Dudley) when
shelling to DOS. This program has lot of advantages related
to DOS CTTY command. BIOS-calls and direct screen writes can
be redirected through your comm-port and it automatically
watch your carrier. You can almost start-up any program in
remote DOS-mode.
This program can be found on many BBS-systems in your local
area. Adapt the batch-file "RSHELL.BAT" to call for this
program, if you desire to use it.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

Q. MAX!BBS Main Menu looks all garbled in stand-by mode.

A. You forgot putting ANSI.SYS as a device in your CONFIG.SYS.
Add a line in your CONFIG.SYS stating: 'DEVICE = ANSI.SYS'.
If your ANSI.SYS does not reside in your root-directory, put
also a pathname in front of 'ANSI.SYS'.
Don't forget to reboot your computer, otherwise this would have
no effect!
-.-

Q. The input fields on my screen do not synchronize with the screen
lay-outs. They are all one line too high.

A. You have probably configured TELIX with the status-line on TOP
of your screen instead of bottom of screen.

Reconfigure TELIX with the status-line on bottom of screen.
1. From within TELIX press 'Alt-O' for Configuration Menu
2. Select 'T' for Terminal options
3. Select 'D' for Status-line
4. Select 'Bottom' for showing status-line
5. Save parameters when Exit !!

Your input fields will now pop-up correctly.

-.-

Q. I seem to have problems running Doorway-programs. Callers don't
see anything on screen. What is the problem.

A. I'm sorry, but I can't discuss any items belonging to other
additional programs. Please consult their manual or the author
of the program.
I'm happy to answer all questions on behalf of MAX!BBS which you
have the right to do so as a registered user, but I am not
taking responsibilities for any other program than those which
you have paid for by me.
The only thing I can remind your callers of, is to not forget
turning DOORWAY mode ON in their TELIX program (ALT =) when
entering a DOOR and to turn it OFF again when exiting your DOORS
(ALT = again). Try the batchfile 'RSHELL.BAT' as a model to
configure other DOOR.x - batchfiles.
What mostly does the job is to change the last command on the
line: '/C:DOS' into '/P:(program name with extension)'.
Good luck..
-.-

NOTES ON RELEASE OF MAX!BBS VERSION 3.05
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

o THIS RELEASE SUPPORTS AUTOMATIC FILE-UPDATES & DIRECTORY MAINTENANCE

Many requests were made to divide the file-sections into sub-
directories for easy maintenance. Up to now all downloadable
files were put in one directory only and their seperate
descriptions were placed in the title-files:

FILE.1 - FILE.9

With the release of version 3.05, this function has been
implemented.

Now you can put your downloadable files from WITHIN your main
'DOWNLOAD'-directory into sub-directories for easy access. These
sub-directories can be named into whatever you think suits your
files (that will be placed there) best.

These sub-directories MUST BE created by running the 'MAX!CONF'-
script (Press 'C' for Configuration within your main Menu). DO
NOT! create these sub-directories yourself by means of by-passing
the Configuration program. This Configuration program will
create all sub-directories automatically, just by answering all
menu-items in the Configuration Menu.

Because of this new (file-)structure, the configuration-file that
is created by the 'MAX!CONF'-script has been altered slightly for
it has to save now also the different pathnames for the file sub-
directories.

ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ W A R N I N G ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

FOR THIS REASON, IF YOU ARE USING A PREVIOUS VERSION OF MAX!BBS,
YOU MUST DELETE YOUR PRESENT CONFIGURATION FILE ('MAX!BBS.CNF')
AND RUN 'MAX!CONF' AGAIN TO BE ABLE TO USE ABOVEMENTIONED
FEATURES! OR TO BE ABLE TO RUN MAX!BBS IN THE FIRST PLACE!

(Sorry for the inconvenience)

ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

MAX!BBS version 3.05 User's Guide

o Added DOORWAY, AICHAT and SHEZ in the Configuration Menu.

DOORWAY
-------
When DOORWAY is installed in the Configuration Menu, it now
automatically generates the file RSHELL.BAT with all parameters
to make a proper DOS Shell within MAX!BBS.

AICHAT
------
AICHAT is an external CHAT-program and written by Serious
Cybernetics.

"The underlying paradigm of AICHAT is that it simulates a sysop,
who has a "train of thought" (or CURRENT TOPIC) at any given time
and will endeavour to involve the user in a discussion. However,
if the user changes topics or mentions something upon which
AICHAT can make a witty remark, it will happily do so. After
somewhere between 2 and 12 minutes or when it can no longer find
any topics of interest to discuss with the user, it will "get
bored" and make an excuse to leave." (quoted from the AICHAT-
manual).

After installing AICHAT, MAX!BBS will no longer use it's internal
chat-function but will call AICHAT as the external chat program.
Besides SysOp-simulation, AICHAT uses wordwrap and adds color to
both sides of input, so it's features are interesting enough to
implement.

SHEZ (v.6.3)
------------
SHEZ is a shell program for viewing and and working with archive
files. SHEZ was written by Jim Derr, The Compression Company. I
have added this program in the configuration menu, to be able to
scan for virusses within archives (e.g. .ARJ, .ZIP, etc.). You
need at least SHEZ version 6.3 to make this option work.

Follow the next procedure:
--------------------------
1. You must replace SCAN.EXE into SHEZ.EXE within the
Configuration Menu of MAX!BBS.
2. Make sure you have placed the file STUFF.COM in your DOS-path.
(This file comes with the package SHEZ 6.3)
3. Make sure you have placed the file SCAN.EXE in your DOS-path.

That's all...

If you press 'F3' within your Configuration Menu, after you have
done the above procedure, all archives in your UPLOAD-directories
will be scanned for virusses. If users have uploaded unarchived
executable files (e.g. .COM, .EXE), these files will NOT be
scanned!! You have to check those yourself!

o Added 2 functions in the User-Editor:
1. [DEL]-key to delete Users
2. [F2] -key for DIAL-option (automatically dials the phone-
number of the selected User within
the User-database).

o Added the option to sent a closing message prior to the BYE-
message. The closing message must be named "CLOSE.ANS",
otherwise MAX!BBS will skip this message at closing off.

o Due to compiler-restrictions, another ANSI-file has been added
which MUST BE PRESENT! in the MAX!BBS-directory.
The file is called: "SYSLOCAL.ANS" (menu for local SysOp
commands).

o Added Newslist generated by NEWS 1.40à (c) 1990 by Enigma
Development Center & JLA

MAX!BBS will now look for the files "NEWS.ANS" or "NEWS.ASC" and
when found show this file after a user has logged in. Of course
you don't need the program "NEWS" from änigma Development Center
& JLA to make your own news-flashes (handy though!). Just create
your own ANSI- or ASCII-file with your favourite editor and give
it one of the abovementioned filenames.

o Also changed the file 'NEWFILES.ANS' into 'NEWFILES.LST' to make
it more compatibel with file-list generators like 'AVAILIST' from
Andrew D. Farmer.

o Also added the option 'A' for 'Allfiles' in the File menu, to
allow users to view all available files for download. This file
must be named: 'ALLFILES.LST' and should be created in the
'DOWNLOAD'-directory. You can create this file yourself or use a
professional file-list generator like 'AVAILIST' from Edward D.
Farmer at your convenience (available on most Bulletin Boards).

o MAX!BBS will look for 'XU.EXE' in your MAX!BBS-directory and will
execute 'WATCHDOG ON' to watch carrier-loss. Your system will
reboot automatically if carrier-loss is detected. Make sure that
X00.SYS has been put as a device in your config.sys (e.g. DEVICE
= X00.SYS) and that the file 'XU.EXE' has been put in your
MAX!BBS-directory! Of course end your 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' with a line
to call 'MAX!BBS' instantly after rebooting your system.

o Added upload possibilities to message-section. Now users can
upload a message (ASCII format only!) without typing in a message
remotely. Users can pre-type files at home and after logging in,
send those message-files (with ASCII-protocol) to anyone listed
as a user on the system. This will spare both time and typing
mistakes.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
