LOCFONE is a small, fast utility program to help users in Maryland,
Washington (DC), Delaware, and metropolitan northern Virginia to
find the general location of a phone number. The user enters the
telephone exchange (the first three digits of the number); the
program returns the city/town where the exchange is located. If the
exchange exists in more than one area, they are listed by area code.

The syntax is quite uncomplicated. At the DOS prompt, simply type
the command "LOCFONE" followed by the 3-digit telephone exchange
(the first three digits of any 7-digit phone number.) The program
returns the exchange locations.

The purpose of this program is to help you figure out where you're
calling. Suppose someone gives you his or her phone number, for
example, 537-XXXX, and says, "Please give me a call this weekend."
When you attempt to dial the number, you get a phone company
recording telling you that, "We're sorry; your call cannot be
completed as dialed. Please check your directory and try again."
You turn to your computer and type "LOCFONE 537" and get a screen
telling you that the 537 exchange is located in Washington, D.C.
(Area Code 202); in Ocean View, DE (Area Code 302), and in
Baltimore, MD (Area Code 410). If you know that your friend lives
someplace in Maryland, you now know to dial his number with a 410
area code.

If you know of any phone exchange which isn't listed correctly, or
if you know of any new phone exchanges in area codes 202, 301, 302,
410, or 703, please let me know. I would like to keep this program
updated and current. You can contact me at the office address below
or via CompuServe [73760,663].

This program is shareware. Try it out for a month or so. If you
like it and intend to continue using it, please send $3.00 to:

Shiacawn Services
19020 Quail Valley Blvd.
Gaithersburg, Maryland 20879

Failure to send the $3.00 shareware fee will result in no adverse
consequences. But my kids' education fund would sure appreciate the
payment. Thanks.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
