DISCLAIMER
==========

This list is provided as is, without any warranty or guarantees of any kind, by
The Data Dimension PCBoard 404-549-8378. Comments and criticisms are welcome.
This list may be freely distributed by anyone as long as it is not modified in
any way. That means there is no charge, a call to my board to let me know
what you think of the list would be nice though.

WHAT IS THIS?
=============

First off, an explanation of this list. This list of boards should not be
considered a ranking or anything like that. What I am trying to do is make
recommendations of boards that I have found in my electronic journeys across the
United States. These are boards that I consider to be worthy of a call by most
anyone for various reasons, which I will list along with each board. I will try
to come out with one of these lists as regularly as possible, each will contain
10 boards that havent previously been mentioned. I do not have any minimum
requirements for this list, you may see boards on here with 10 megs and 1 node
as well as boards with 300 megs and 5 or more nodes. Large download sections
are not a prerequisite at all, there are some darn good message-base-only boards
around the country, you may see some of those here as well. The only other
thing that should be noted is that you will only find boards in this list that
are PCPursuitable as I, obviously, will only be able to list boards that I have
called, and I cant afford long distance. If you think you have a good board
and you are not on this list, give me a call on my own board, leave me your
number, hours, and whatever other information I might need, and I'll give you
a try just for trying my board.

PAYBOARDS VS. FREEBOARDS
========================

A note on donations. You'll find that most boards across the country will
ask for a donation of some kind, if you are not a sysop you'll find yourself
limited in access on these boards. I started to only include free boards on
this list, but I quickly found out that there just arent many truely free
boards left. As a sysop, I realize the cost of running one of these, if
you find a board that you really like and call more than once a week, you
should probably consider sending the Sysop the contribution he asks for, if
you call that often, you'll get your money's worth as well as help the board
get even better. If you dont donate, you'll also run across ratio systems
quite often, where your access level is based on your upload/download ratio.
Share the files and information that you get off these boards, that is what
makes the BBS community successful. If you know the answer to a question in
a message base, answer it. If you have this great new program that you have
found and you see that a board doesnt have it, upload it. I'll try to denote
the boards that want money and the benefits gained by these donations (usually
more time, access to more files, and access to other nodes if they exist), but
please note that this isnt a list of "free" boards...though some are...

WHERE CAN I GET PAST/FUTURE EDITIONS?
=====================================

All editions will always be available on my board:

The Data Dimension
404-549-8378
300/1200/2400 24 hrs
Full Access on first call

Other than that, just look around on your favorite boards, distribution is
pretty high on this list.

NEWS & UPDATES
==============

It's been longer than I had planned since I released a new edition of the
list. But it's finally here. I just havent had time to sit down and do
much calling or sit down and write the new list until now. Instead of
going for monthly, it looks like I am going to have to shoot for a new
release every other month, hopefully more often if possible.

I am glad to see that the list has become so popular. I appreciate all of
you who have let me know that you enjoy the list. I'll continue to produce
these as long as I know someone is getting some use from it, and that is the
way that I find out. I also appreciate all of you that called my board with
suggestions of boards to add to the list. There are a few boards in this
addition that probably would not have been here had someone not pointed me
in their direction.

FINALLY, THE LIST
=================
Now that all of the disclaimers are out of the way, here's the list, in no
particular order....

BLUE RIDGE EXPRESS -- RBBS -- Richmond, VA -- Webb Blackman -- 2400
804-790-1675
I'm making an exception to my usual rule of including only PCPursuitable
boards in the list with this board. This one is worth a bit of long
distance. It is a big board with 3 digit storage and several lines, but
yet it is one that actually gives you full access to everything on the
first call and is ran in the friendly laid back manner that you usually
only find in smaller boards. Quite refreshing to find a monster sized
board that isnt ran like a business, that's why it made the list.

VIKING MAGIC -- PCBoard -- Cambridge, MA -- David Patterson -- 9600 Microcom
617-354-2171
Another big PCBoard with tons of storage at 230 megs. This board along
with some of the other big boards in Boston make it one of my favorite
cities. There are some unique conferences on this board in addition to
the good files selection as well, including one on the occult and magic,
though you have to ask for access to it. If you are looking for a board
with alot of files, but yet some message bases that are off the beaten
path, give this board a try.

NICK AT NIGHT -- Wildcat -- Salt Lake City, UT -- Nick Lemburg -- 2400
801-964-1889
Lets take a break from the big boards and go for something with a bit
more of a homey flavor. This board has everything, just not in the
massive quantities that some of the others have. You've got games,
interesting message bases, and a decent selection of files, but you
dont have the problem of being 200 messages behind in every conference
if you miss a day. If you like Wildcat, this is definitely a good
board to call as he has a good selection of utilites for the BBS and
is a beta site for several of them.

SOFTWARE SOCIETY -- PCBoard -- N. Brunswick, NJ -- Dave Klein -- 9600 USR
201-214-8896
I'm new to this board, so I cant go into much detail on the quality of
the message bases and the like. However, the software selection and
general atmosphere of the board was enough to impress me. It lives up
to its name.

RBBS OF CHICAGO -- RBBS -- Chicago, IL -- Loren Jones -- 9600 USR
312-352-1035
One of the premier boards in the country. It is just now making the
list due to the difficulty of gaining a connection to the Chicago node
on PCPursuit. My first experience with this board was a month or so
ago, and I was impressed. At 160 megs, you'll find no lack of files.
And he has several lines coming in and adds more regularly, there is a
catch however. You have to contribute to get access to the extra lines.
It's worth it, in addition to the download directories, you'll find
some very big names in the message bases.

ARCHERON -- Wildcat -- Salt Lake City, UT -- Michael Cleverly -- 2400
801-298-2812
This board is about average when it comes to message bases and files,
but then my idea of average when it comes to boards that I place on
this list is still very good. However, this board made the list because
of it's games. If you are into door games as either a sysop or a player,
give this board a try. He's got lots of 'em. He has written a few
himself as well, this board is the home of the new "Galactic Conquest"
door that is becoming pretty popular around the country.

SPARTA -- PCBoard -- Sparta, NJ -- Rich Driggers -- 2400
201-729-7056
Ok, so I went whole-hog with the big boards in this edition. This one is
no exception. I'm sure alot of you have heard of it. Big hard drives,
lots of lines, and alot of gurus in the message bases make this another
one of the most popular boards in the country. To top it off, this one
is a member of PCBnet, so there are plenty of very active conferences on
a variety of subjects available.

786 BBS -- PCBoard -- Chicago, IL -- Shabbir Damani -- 2400
312-728-9722
This one isnt a monster board, but it is above average in size as well
with two lines and alot of files. Shabbir is another one of those
sysops who works really hard to keep his board very current. You'll
find the latest files here as well as some of the latest doors as well.
If you like the games, this should be another one of your regular stops
as he has the registered versions of almost of all of the biggies. This
one is also a member of PCBnet, so the message bases are jumping as well.

PROGRAMMER'S INFO EXCHANGE -- PCBoard -- Woodstock, GA -- Tony Elliot -- 2400
404-928-0033
In the last edition, I included a board for Turbo programmers. This one
is for all of you Quick Basic fans. If you are into QB, this board is a
must visit as that is its specialty. That isnt all you'll find here
however. There are alot of files and message bases devoted to other
languages as well, but the primary interest of the board is programming.
Dont call here looking for games. It is yet another member of PCBnet.

MICROSELLER -- PCBoard -- Verona, NJ -- Mark Rapp -- 2400
201-239-1346
I'll end this list with another monster. This one weighs in a 240 megs.
This list has also been filled with members of PCBnet as well, this one
is yet another. Though most of it's 20 conferences are available only
via QuikMail. Access policies for this board have been changed for the
better in the last year or so, that is why it is now in the list. It
had previously required mail-in registration, and like most people, even
though I am a sysop and fully understand the reasoning, I seem to never
get around to mailing in registrations, especially when I call 100s of
boards a month. You can now register online here. Let's hear it for
full access on first call.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
