The case
========
One of a problem found after the PC event, or in other words, in
the telematic mass market is that people don't want any more to read manuals
or documentation files; for a lot of reason that I call "Information
Saturation".

Too much information from newspapers, video, books and other media
make modern people less available to digest other info so that they become
immediately frustrated when looking at a new book to read and learn!

At the same time more than 1/3rd of all software sold around the
world has not never been used, due to the difficulty to learn too difficult
and user unfriendly packages.

For that reason I implemented for my professional need a package to
prepare, display and navigate documents in format to let the
new docs understanding more easy, faster than before and funny.

The Hyper Text technology allow for the first time to adapt a text to the
layer and not viceversa.

But in spite of this new technology, I can say with scarce success
because it's probably too early to convince people to kill paper and read
manuals directly at a PC screen. I found, with a bit of surprise, that
they still want a paper document even if they don't want to read it !!!

Ok, I told to myself; I need something that can be printed as a
document, but at the same time, can be read on a PC screen in
like document format (window-keyword, jumpto-to-keyword, execute-and-come-
back keyword,etc.).

That's why of Help Master.

SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE
--------------------

: to let HM know the hot keywords

: the keyword to search

: the found keyword

: window on the keyword

: program or demo execution

Reading the on line HELP (F1 key) you know how to navigate the file
(line, screen or page down/up) or to find text etc.

Configuring HM
--------------

You just have in the package an HM.CFG file with the standard
parameter setting; that means if HM doesn't find this file in the current
directory, it takes for good its built-in values. Changing HM.CFG, HM
changes related value.

All HM messages are in external file called HM.MSG. Take a look at
this file and change what you want to customize it for your need. You can
also change tongue. Be sure to replace messages with the same original
length.

Files in the package.
--------------------

You must have the following files :

- README.NOW to execute HM the first time

- HM.EXE the main program

- HM.CFG the configuration file

- HM.MSG the external messages/comments file

- HM.DOC the doc file (in HM format)

PREPARING A DOCUMENT
====================

Divide your document in two parts. We can call the first one as
"Main Part" and the second one "Notes Part".

Set your Word Processor at the line length of 78 character per line
for "Main Part" and to 72 characters per line for "Notes Part".

When you want to open a window on a specific key (then it becomes a
key word) enclose this word between two delimiter characters (defined in
HM.CFG), in this case let me chose the 'less' and 'greater' delimiter
characters and the word which doesn't mean nothing for non Italian.

As you can see this word has different color just to advise you of
a keyword presence. Now if you press the ENTER key you enter in pop up
window explaining the pippo meaning.

At the same time go to "Notes Part" of the document and write
exactly the same word (i.e. pippo) enclosed between two character delimiter
defined in HM.CFG file. In this case they are decimal 123 and decimal 125,
then write up to 20 rows with a maximum of 72 characters per line. Then let
HM know you have finished with following sequence of characters: "-@-"
without commas in the real case.

If you want to build a "jump-to-keyword", simply enclose above
"pippo" word between other character delimiter (also these defined in HM.CFG
file). In this document the page numbers are "jump-to-keyword" so that to
can directly jump to these pages.

pag 9

N O T E S
=========

{Character Delimiter}
HM must know the hot keyword you want to investigate. It's enough to
delimit the word or the phrase with two characters, the first one is
the starting and the second one the ending character.

You can use the character you want (declare them in the HM.CFG file)
i.e. brackets, parenthesis,etc. but you must be careful to don't use
characters you use as text.

You can also use the character set from DECIMAL 1 to DECIMAL 31
(unprintable characters) being careful on some special characters like
DECIMAL 26 (end of file). Try first DECIMAL 16 (starting) and DECIMAL
17 (ending) or DECIMAL 4 and 5 (I used them with some text/word
processor without any problem).
-@-
{Source Keyword}
The source keyword is the word you want to better investigate; this
program allows three different Target Keywords :

jump-to = jump to document's line where a keyword equal to the
source one is found

window = open a window explaining the meaning of the source
keyword leaving unchanged the text pointer position

exec = execute the program defined in the keyword and comes
back to the same document's position.
-@-
{Jump-To}
See .
-@-
{Jump-to Keyword}
When you have a long document with i.e. 50 pages, you can write on
first page the Table of Contents with related page number. If you
declare as Source Keyword this page number as following :
..........................................................."pag 1"
How to print the document.................................."pag 2"
..........................................................."pag 3"
where the " character (decimal 34) is in this case the Source Keyword
delimiter (the same for starting end ending) and if you mark the real
page number as :

...............
[pag 1]
...............

where [ and ] (decimal 91 and 93) are in this case the Jump-to Keyword
delimiters, you can allow your reader to choice the page he wants to go
and simply pressing the ENTER key he can go there immediately. I use
this kind of keyword in this file to let you jump from a page to
another (use ESC key to come back to previous screen).
-@-

pag 10

{Window Keyword}
You can mainly use this kind of keyword to immediately open a Pop Up
Window on the Source Keyword, expecially in HELP files. If you are
seeing this file via HM you are testing this kind of opportunity! The
character delimiters of the window option MUST be different from the
ones.

HS looks for a keyword delimited by above characters, reads all the
lines up to "-@-" endind mark (or up to the 20th line) and displays
data in a window of 72 characters x 20 lines.

A Pop Up Window can have one or more keywords opening other Pop Up
Windows up to a mximum of 9 nested windows.
-@-

{Exe Keyword}
If you have a demo program for a live demonstration, you can delimit
the name of above program with the Source Keyword delimiter characters
and when your reader press the RETURN key, HM executes your program and
then comes back to the same document position as before.
-@-

{HM}
Help Master is another Maurizio's House product. Usually people want to
have a paper manual but really don't read it for a lot of reason.

I've developed a package to prepare and read documents in
format, in electronic way; but it's to early to convince people to kill
paper forever! Then the point is : paper document is still necessary
even if people don't use it.

HM is the right solution to by pass this strange fact. You can prepare
your DOC file as usual, and in few minutes to change it in an
Hyper Text like format (as the document you are reading) or to modify
in a DOC or Help ASCII file coming within another package.

You can still print the modified document as standard ASCII files.

N.B.
- Type F1 for the Help Menu.
- Press ENTER key to know something about text .
- Type ESC to quit this window.
-@-

{navigation}
You can navigate in following way :

- Home key go to document beginning
- End key go to document end
- PgDn/PgUp one screen page Down or Up (21 rows)
- Ctrl PgDn/PgUp one document page Down or Up (probably 60 rows)
- Arrow Dn/Up one line Down or Up
- Arrow Left/Right change keywords (if they exist on that screen page)
- ENTER key open a Pop Up help window
- ESCape key come back to previous help window or main text
-@-

pag 11

{navigating}
See .
-@-
{Hyper Text}
An Hyper Text is a text in which each word can be a keyword to access
an other text via a Pop Up Window. In that second text you can find
another keyword to access another text (or another part of the same
text) etc. so that you can navigate your text as you like, or better as
it's required by the level of your knowledge.

You can have as keyword even an IMAGE or a PROGRAM so that your text
could become a media not only to inform readers but also to teach them
lessons executing demo programs etc.
-@-
{reader knowledge}
Current media force people to adapt themselves to them, having
available only a YES-or-NOT option. If you want to read a newspaper
article you have to read everything or nothing, if you're listening to
a television speaker you have to listen all the speech or to close TV,
the same for movie, theater, book etc.

Using Hyper Text document, the reader can decide the level of knowledge
he wants, because the text he can go where he needs, can
come back, navigate again so that at the end he can learn exactly what
he wants, nothing more, nothing less.
-@-

{pippo}
Now HM has opened a pop up help window with the pippo word explanation.
This window can have other keywords opening other pop up help window up
to a navigation of 9 windows in depth.

The ESC key lets you come back previous window. On top of pop up window
you see the keyword name and on the top the opened window.

That's all.
-@-
{ASCII}
When you have an ASCII file on your PC, that means you can PRINT it,
you can TYPE it, you can EDIT it.

- PRINT filename
- TYPE filename
- EDLIN filename
-@-
{Author}
Yes I'm.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
