product. Problems should be directed to the developer
for possible improvements.

WHAT DOES IT DO?
The purpose is to record and report network use.
This software logs each session according to when the
batch file (e.g. AOL.BAT) is activated and when it
terminates. It will also print a report of sessions
logged, the elapsed time and the expected charges from
the network. Summary totals are printed and displayed
as well.

WHY USE IT?
By keeping a log of network use at the users PC, you have
a very accurate running record of when you have been on-line.
This can be very important when you believe something is wrong
with the charges shown by the network. Overcharges can occur
if someone gets your password and misuses it or problems with
the network cause you to be billed for time when you were
actually disconnected. Various other potential computer mishaps
can make your billing inaccurate. Even when there are no
errors in the network accounts, this software will assist you
in monitoring and budgeting your on-line time.

WHAT'S INVOLVED?
You should have an IBM compatible, a VGA and a printer.
To use this software, simply move the files listed below into
the directory where ONLINE TIME CHECKER will be used. If you
are using America On-line, the AOL.BAT file included here can
probably be used as it is. Otherwise, modify the run BAT file
by adding the statement- RUN LOG#1 immediately prior to the
execution of the primary software. Immediately after the primary
software command add- RUN LOG#2. To get a time usage report,
use the command TELLME .

Sample bat file-
@ECHO OFF
c:
CD \AOL
RUN LOG#1
KERNEL
RUN LOG#2

In order to keep your reports accurate, it will be important that
the user be prepared to sign on to the system as soon as the
network software is loaded and to completely remove the network
software so as to complete the batch run, as soon as the on-line
system has disconnected.

RELEASE 1.1-
This is the second issue. The software will warn the user at the
end of each session, if the data file is 75% full or more. This is
to provide ample time to run the file fix utility so as to remove old
records. Other user-friendly messages have been added to aid the user.
The printed report now includes the estimated fee for each session for
a quick compare with reports from the network.

LOG#0.OBJ An optional program which displays detail

WILL IT RUN FROM WINDOWS?
If you are using a DOS application like AOL DOS version and running
it under Windows, this product can be run the same way. However,
the America On-Line Windows version will not execute from a batch
file from Windows or otherwise and therefore has not been made to
operate properly with this Time Checker. If you use the DOS version
and Windows, simply use the Windows Program Manager to add
these applications to the same program group as your network
software. For example, use the program manager to open a new file
in the program group for America Online. For description you could
use "OL Time", for the command-line the entry would be "RUN PRT#1",
and for the working directory the entry would be "C:\AOL".

NOTES ON PRINTING- The command TELLME will print a detail report and
display summary totals and estimated costs. It asks the user to
enter a 6 digit date to begin the report from. If the date is prior
to the default start date of Jan 1, 1994, the date is considered
invalid and must be entered again. The printing will not proceed
unless a Y is enetered to the "Is Printer Ready" prompt. However,
the test system would run to display the summary though the printer
was not actually turned on.

RUNNING FILE UTILITY IN REGISTERED COPY -
The command to run the file maintenance utility is in FILEFIX.BAT.
Issue command FILEFIX

WHY SPEND $8 FOR A REGISTERED VERSION?
The final version allows you to control the data file so as to keep
the figures accurate as to hourly rates. It also allows you to
regenerate the data file or to purge the out-dated records so as to
keep the system going as long as needed. Registered users are
entitled to future upgrades and support as may be deemed appropriate.
Special enhancements can be contracted for as well.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
