COM-AND Registration
------------------------------------------------------------------------
COM-AND is copyright 1992 CABER Software. All rights are reserved world
wide, excepting redistribution under the shareware principle. Restric-
tions on redistribution of COM-AND are set out in the accompanying
document VENDOR.DOC.

COM-AND is distributed freely and may be copied by anyone for any number
of machines, for purposes of evaluation. COM-AND is "shareware". You
may evaluate COM-AND for a period of up to 30 days. After 30 days, if
you use COM-AND you must pay for it. Terms and conditions for the use of
COM-AND are set out in the "License Agreement" following these pages.

If you have received this copy from a Users' Group, "Software Library" or
"SIG", and have paid a small fee (usually $3 to $10), you have NOT
acquired a registration or the continued right to use COM-AND. That fee
was for the convenience of obtaining a diskette with COM-AND on it. The
fee does NOT apply to the registration fee.

Registration entitles you to use COM-AND, and licenses you to use all
future shareware versions of COM-AND. By registering your copy of
COM-AND (or any shareware product), you are promoting and supporting the
convenient distribution method and free evaluation policy that brought
you this copy of COM-AND. Registration of COM-AND also includes:

. A free Compuserve intro-pack with $15.00 usage credit (if you wish).

. License to use the CISAUTO scripts for Compuserve (available on
registration of COM-AND, for a small fee).

. A dialing directory of BBSes tailored to your area code and your
expressed interests (available on registration of COM-AND, for a
small fee).

. A reduced rate for subscription to Shareware Magazine (50% off).

. A reduced rate for subscription to the Houston Public (Software)
Library (PsL) magazine (33% off).

. A reduced price for the "the Source Book", the 700-page guide to
PD/Shareware (33% off). This includes a four-disk set of the latest
PsL Reviews Disks.

. License to use all COM-AND accessory programs. These are currently:
PC-VCO, CCHESS, VCOLIB, CBRIDGE, CCOLOR, UNPACKIT, and UNSTUFIT.

The COM-AND accessories are publicly distributed as separate products.
You may download them from any library, or order them from any vendor,
carrying COM-AND. The CISAUTO scripts for CompuServe, and the tailored
dialing directory (each available on registration) are discussed in
greater detail below.

COM-AND Registration
------------------------------------------------------------------------
COM-AND is available as shareware through GEnie, CIS, UNISON, and Delphi.
COM-AND is also available from many Bulletin Board systems (PC-EXEC in
Milwaukee, for one) and many shareware vendors (for one, the Public
(software) Library in Houston TX).

You may register COM-AND directly from CABER Software for $50.00 (US).
Payment must be made in U.S. funds and drawn on a U.S. financial insti-
tution or international postal money order. [For credit card orders and
orders outside of North America, please see "COM-AND Orders", below).]

To register, please provide the following information with your payment:
name, mailing address, phone, and which of the above offers you wish. A
registration form is included (REGISTER.FRM), and may be printed with the
DOS PRINT command.

[You may use the included script REGISTER.CMD to print REGISTER.FRM. To
use REGISTER.CMD, load COM-AND, press F2, and then type REGISTER .
The script directs you from there.]

On receipt of registration, CABER will return to you a registered copy of
COM-AND on diskette. If you select any additional items (listed above,
and in REGISTER.FRM) and include payment, the items will be included with
the registered package.

If you are not satisfied with COM-AND after you register it, you may
return the diskettes you received from CABER within 90 days for a full
refund. You must return ALL diskettes to CABER, and agree to destroy any
copies of COM-AND you may have made.

COM-AND Support
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Direct support from the author is available through various on-line
systems. You may EMail the author at:

GEnie, Delphi: TARTAN
CIS: 73147,2665
Internet: [email protected]

Inquiries and questions about COM-AND are also answered through Support
EtCetera, in Long Beach CA. They may be reached:

Voice: (310) 439-6104
BBS: (310) 439-7714 (1200/2400 8n1)

The author attempts to answer any questions received. Comment and sug-
gestions for functional improvements are welcomed. Problem reports are
logged as received, and resolved if at all possible.

It is generally observed (by pundits) that the field of computer communi-
cations is complex (and even exasperating). The author does NOT own one
of every modem ever made, and, most likely, information from your own
modem manual will be needed. If you're patient with us, every reasonable
attempt will be made to solve the problem.

COM-AND Orders
------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may register COM-AND with MasterCard, Visa, Amex or Discover credit
cards through the Public (software) Library by calling 1-800-242-4775 or
1-713-524-6398, or by FAX to 1-713-524-6398. These numbers are for
orders only. To ensure that you get the latest version, PsL will notify
us the day of your order, and we will ship the product directly to you.
Any questions regarding the status of the order, refunds, registration
options, product details, technical support, volume discounts, dealer
pricing, site licenses, etc., MUST be directed to CABER Software (address
below). PsL sells shareware disks, and accepts registrations for some
shareware products. PsL DOES NOT offer technical support.

In the UK or mainland Europe, COM-AND may be registered through Hillfoots
Data Services (UK) or Heinz Abegglen (Switzerland). They may be reached:

Hillfoots Data Services Registration is 28.78 Pounds Sterling
Mains House and may be mailed to the address at
Tillicoultry the left.

When you register through Hillfoots or Heinz Abegglen, CABER will be sent
immediate notification or your order. CABER ships the product directly
to you. [Transatlantic delay is inevitable, however.] Any questions
regarding the status of the order, refunds, registration options, product
details, technical support, volume discounts, dealer pricing, site
licenses, etc., MUST be directed to CABER Software (address below).

CABER Software does not maintain a database of BBSes outside of North
America. Contact CABER through CIS if you are interested in the CIS
Automation script-set (non-North American calling scripts can be
developed).

COM-AND Distributors
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Commercial users of COM-AND must register COM-AND with the author or an
licensed commercial distributor of COM-AND. Site licenses (multiple copy
registrations) are available from:

COM-AND Site License
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Site licenses for COM-AND are available from CABER Software, or from
Support EtCetera (addresses listed above). A site license offers a
discount for multiple copy registrations of COM-AND, provided the
licensee agrees to manage copying of COM-AND within the organization.

A licensee may NOT modify the program or charge a fee for copying or
distributing the program or its documentation. A licensee may NOT
rent, lease, or abridge COM-AND.

CABER Software, or Support EtCetera, are glad to discuss site license
terms with any organizations, and send license forms on request.

Any organization licensing 30 or more copies may request, for no addi-
tional charge, a customized version of COM-AND, limited to:

. Alt-I Information screen: 10 lines of the program information
screen are devoted to a description of COM-AND and its accessories in
the 'standard' edition. CABER Software will encode any information a
licensee (meeting the quantity restriction) requests in this space.
CABER Software retains the last 5 lines of the window for itself.

. Copyright statement upon termination: CABER software will change
the program termination notice from:

"Freely redistributable; CABER Software "

to "Licensed from CABER Software (all rights reserved),
, by: "

The request for this 'private-labeling' may be made as a part of a site
license, or may be requested after a license is obtained. Upgrades of
the custom software may be obtained from CABER Software after each new
shareware release of COM-AND for a small fee.

CABER Software is be happy to negotiate terms for product support with
any organization registering 30 or more copies. The 'standard' version
of COM-AND is supported strictly through electronic Mail and on-line
services at this time.

COM-AND CISAUTO Scripts
------------------------------------------------------------------------
CompuServe (known generally as CIS), is a host system, arguably the
largest and most active. CIS provides its customers with a mail service,
forums where messages, files, and databases relating to a wide variety of
interests may be found. CIS provides online discussion areas where
opinions, experiences, and expertise are shared in real-time... and
much more.

When connected to CIS, you pay by the minute. COM-AND scripts are able
to perform tasks on your behalf, at the greatest possible speed. A set
of scripts have been created to automate the most common activities on
CIS. These scripts are collectively named CISAUTO, and are available to
registered users of COM-AND. The scripts automate:

On-line Off-line
----------------------------------- ------------------------------------
. Connect and logon
. Capture waiting mail . Read captured mail
. Send mail . Reply/prepare new mail to send
. Capture preselected forum notes . Read captured forum messages
. Send forum messages . Reply/prepare new forum messages
. Browse and download forum files . Read captured browse listings
. Send forum files . Prepare files for upload
. Forum/SIG database
. Address book collection

Simply stated, the CIS Automation divides the use of CompuServe into two
phases: Online, and offline. Offline, you specify a series of tasks
to perform every logon. You may prepare ad hoc tasks offline as well
(for execution during the next online session). When you direct, CISAUTO
connects to CIS, logs on, performs all tasks specified, and then logs
off. Captured mail, messages, and downloaded files may be then reviewed
offline (at your leisure).

CISAUTO requires you have installed COM-AND, have acquired a CIS account,
and have a dialing directory entry prepared to dial CIS. CISAUTO also
requires considerable disk space. [512k memory, and hard disk (with
approximately 2 Mb of free space) is recommended.]

CISAUTO is NOT distributed as shareware. It is available ONLY to regis-
tered users of COM-AND. You may order the CISAUTO disk for a small fee
when you register COM-AND. [See the file REGISTER.FRM for the fee and
ordering.]

Tailored dialing directory
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a small fee, CABER Software will prepare a dialing directory specific
to your area code of BBS systems. When you register COM-AND, please
include the preparation fee, indicate you wish this tailored directory,
and provide us with: 1) your area code, 2) a first and second alterna-
tive area codes, and 3) your modem's maximum speed. [See REGISTER.FRM.]

COM-AND Accessories
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four accessories are available for use with COM-AND. These accessories
are for use over conferencing services such as People/Link's PARTY,
GEnie's RTC and CIS's CB:

PC-VCO provides a way to 'see' and 'hear' people talking
CCHESS supports chess games with another conference user
CBRIDG supports bridge games with other conference users
CCOLOR tracks conference users, coloring each speaker's received text

PC-VCO has been distributed (seventh release) as PC-VCO22.ZIP. CCHESS
has been distributed (third release) as CCHESS12.ZIP. CBRIDGE has been
distributed (second release) as CBRIDG11.ZIP. CCOLOR has been distri-
buted (fourth release) as CCOLOR13.ZIP. [On CIS the file names are:
PC-VCO.ZIP, CCHESS.ZIP, CBRIDG.ZIP, and CCOLOR.ZIP.]

COM-AND BBS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A BBS script is distributed with each release of COM-AND. The BBS script
is simple, but completely usable. Being a script, you may tailor it to
any functionality you might wish.

However, tailoring a script is ALOT of work! A version of the BBS script
for COM-AND is separately available from Support EtCetera, in Long Beach
CA. Support EtCetera's version adds multiple conferences (each with its
own file library), virus scanning of uploads, and many custom options.

Contact Support EtCetera (address listed below) for more information on
their BBS for COM-AND. You may try the BBS at 1-310-439-7714 (2400 8n1).

And another COM-AND BBS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A BBS featuring COM-AND is publicly available in Newington VA, as well.
[It is a COM-AND BBS script, modified and expanded by its sysop.]

NCC (Newington COM-AND Comms) BBS
300-2400 MNP
(703) 690-6192
SYSOP: Bruce Butler

The CALOGS utility for COM-AND was created by Bruce Butler, and is freely
available to callers to the NCC BBS. CALOGS is a program to analyze the
call-logs maintained by COM-AND to produce usage reports. Very very
handy, and highly recommended!

In 1987, shareware authors founded the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). In forming this industry association, these
Shareware authors had several primary goals in mind, including:

. To inform users about Shareware programs and about Shareware as
a method of distributing and marketing software.

. To foster professionalism amongst Shareware authors by setting
programming, marketing, and support standards for ASP members.

. To encourage broader distribution of Shareware through user
groups and disk dealers who agree to identify and explain the
nature of Shareware.

. To provide a forum through which ASP members may communicate,
share ideas, and learn from each other.

ASP OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT

CABER Software (R. Scott McGinnis) is a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to ensure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware re-
lated problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP
may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or
problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for
members' products.

You may write the ASP Ombudsman at:

The COM-AND program and all other programs and materials distributed or
shipped with it are Copyright CABER Software, 1992, and are protected by
U.S. copyright law and International treaties. In the remainder of this
document, this collection of programs is referred to simply as "COM-AND".
You are granted a license to use your copy of COM-AND only under the
terms and conditions specified in this license agreement.

A "registered" copy of COM-AND may take one of two forms:

. a copy on diskette bearing the original CABER and COM-AND trademarks,
purchased from CABER Software or from an authorized distributor.

. a copy of COM-AND 'bundled' into another product, with the licensee's
name encoded into the termination message.

[If you have registered COM-AND in the past and did not receive a regis-
tered diskette, or if you purchased COM-AND bundled into another product,
you may obtain a registered diskette for a small fee. See the file
REGISTER.FRM.]

A "shareware" copy of COM-AND is a copy distributed on diskette or via
an electronic bulletin board, on-line service, or other electronic
means, obtained from a shareware disk vendor, or obtained from another
individual.

Shareware copies of COM-AND are distributed to allow you to evaluate the
program before you pay for it. They are Copyright 1992 by CABER Soft-
ware, and do not constitute "free" or "public domain" software. You may
use a shareware copy of COM-AND at no charge for a trial period of up to
30 days. If you wish to continue using COM-AND after 30 days, you must
purchase a registered copy. If you choose not to purchase a registered
copy, you must stop using COM-AND, though you may keep copies and pass
them along to others.

Your registered copy of COM-AND may only be used on one computer at any
given time, unless you have a site license. [Under a site license,
COM-AND may only be used on the number of computers specified in your
site license agreement.] You may NOT rent, lease, or otherwise abridge
a registered copy of COM-AND.

COM-AND User's License Agreement page 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may install your registered copy of COM-AND on a computer attached to
a network provided there is no possibility your copy is used by more than
one user, unless you have a site license. [Under a site license there
should be no possibility of the program being used by more users than the
license specifies.] A "user" is defined as one keyboard which is
connected to a computer on which COM-AND is installed, regardless of
whether or not the user of the keyboard is aware of the installation or
use of COM-AND on the system.

You may copy any version of COM-AND for normal backup purposes. You may
give copies of the SHAREWARE distribution to other individuals, which
they may also use and copy subject to the terms of this agreement. If
you copy the shareware version of COM-AND for others, you must include
all of the files distributed with it, including this one.

You may NOT distribute CISAUTO, the tailored dialing directory or any
additional information you received from CABER Software on registration
of COM-AND. CISAUTO and the tailored dialing directory are copyright
products of CABER Software. CISAUTO is NOT shareware.

Specifically, you may not place COM-AND or any part of the COM-AND pack-
age in a commercial library, or distribute it with any other product, or
as an incentive to purchase any other product, without written permission
from CABER Software (ASP vendors are automatically granted this permis-
sion). [Restrictions on redistribution are also set forth in the
accompanying document VENDOR.DOC.]

Distribution on a CD-ROM is explicitly PROHIBITED without written
authorization from CABER (ASP vendors are automatically granted this
permission). Liquidated damages for unauthorized CD-ROM distribution
shall not be less than $2.00 for each copy made of the original CD-ROM.

Vendor and/or Retail Store distribution is explicitly PROHIBITED without
written authorization from CABER (ASP vendors are automatically granted
this permission). Liquidated damages for unauthorized Vendor and/or
Retail Store distribution shall not be less than $2.00 for each program
copy sold.

You may not reverse-engineer, disassemble, modify, decompile or create
derivative works of the product. You may NOT use or distribute COM-AND
or its documentation in connection with ANY commercial venture, product,
publication or service without written permission from CABER Software.
You may NOT rent, lease, or otherwise abridge the registered or share-
ware releases of COM-AND.

COM-AND is a trademark of CABER Software. CABER Software is a business
registered in the state of Illinois, USA. All rights are reserved
worldwide.

The COM-AND documents are copyrighted and all rights are reserved. The
reproduction of any document on the COM-AND diskette, in whole or part,

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
