UPDATE.DOC - Update instructions
(C) Copyright 1992 Darkside International

==========

This file contains instructions on updating to new
releases of Waffle. If installing for the first time, contents
of this file may be ignored.

All DOS updates require replacing the executable files in the
/waffle/bin directory with the ones supplied. Performing a
blanket removal of all your files will lose your configuration.

Always replace the documentation with newly supplied docs.

If support files need addition, replacement or modification,
special instructions will be given below.

==========

Version 1.65 - IMPORTANT

1. Convert your password file to 1.65 format.

For DOS systems:

CD \WAFFLE\ADMIN
CONVPW
REN PASSWORD PASSWORD.164 (save for posterity)
REN PASSWORD.165 PASSWORD

For Unix systems:

cd ~/waffle/admin
../bin/convpw
mv password password.164 (save for posterity)
mv password.165 password

2. Build an INDEX for the password file:

Go into the ADMIN directory (right now the SYSMAN program
must be run from the admin directory.) Type:

sysman index

This will create an index file. If you want to check the
consistency, type

sysman check

It's ok to rebuild the index file at any time.

(Note: Not all of the SYSMAN commands are finished.)

3. Move some files from ../system to ../text:

../text/change
../text/chat
../text/entry
../text/excuse
../text/failed
../text/feedback
../text/files
../text/logout
../text/logwarn
../text/master
../text/moderate
../text/newusers
../text/shoo
../text/status
../text/time
../text/unfiles
../text/welcome

4. For DOS systems, upgrade the DOS UUCP portions:

Create a /waffle/uucp directory.

Move the following files from /waffle/system to /waffle/uucp.
Note the name change on the last file.

/waffle/system/paths
/waffle/system/systems
/waffle/system/seqf -> /waffle/uucp/sequence

Create or modify the following files, based on the documentation
in NETWORK.DOC or by looking at the supplied examples.

/waffle/uucp/systems
/waffle/uucp/dialers
/waffle/uucp/scripts

They have changed drastically, so this is important.
Add the following file; don't change it if you don't need to.

/waffle/uucp/permits

5. Run the mailbox builder utility:

This converts the multi-file 1.64 mailbox system into the
single-file 1.65 mailboxes, for all users:

For DOS systems,

makebox -a c:\user

For Unix systems,

makebox -a /waffle/user

(Note: not all the other MAKEBOX options are finished.)

6. DOS systems: Update your /waffle/extern/_system file:

Add lines for "chrome" and "execute". Here's mine:

mail /command="RMAIL -u%A %i"
news /command="RNEWS -u%A"
arclist /command="ARCLIST %i"
poll /exit=60
chrome /exit=120
execute /exit=140
shell /command="C:\COMMAND"
command /command="C:\COMMAND /c %i"

If you want an extra-secure UUQ, edit /waffle/extern/uuq:

/access=1 /command="UUQ -u%A %i"

7. Add or update the following files:

../menus/admin
../menus/browse
../menus/short
../menus/mail

../text/loghelp
../text/nofiles
../text/nojoin

8. Change any static file "level x: y y y y" format lines
that you have to use the following formats:

calls: 2 2 2 3 3 3 4 4 5 99
mails: 3 5 5 8 8 8 8 8 9 99

ratios: 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20
times: 45 70 70 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

Numbers are listed for levels 0 through 9.

These lines are *optional*, so if you don't run a public
system, you can nuke the old "level x: y y y y" lines.

9. Update the FILES section to the new configuration scheme:

Look at the sample /waffle/system/dirs file, and modify it
to suit your FILES section. This file replaces all the @access
files used with 1.64 and previous versions.

After this is done, old @access files may be removed.
(Some third party software may still require these, however.)

There are many options available in this configuration file
(for instance, to support CD ROM devices.) Read FILES.DOC for
further information.

0. Fun things to play with:

The new RN command (do we have a better name for this?)
It's supposedly a nicer interface. Definitely faster.

Using $ in the Shell: password file field, will execute
a command without WAFFLE.EXE in memory. Cleans up messy RUN.BAT's.

Changing headers with the "Headers" command, set these in
the 'alter:' static file option:

alter: Subject Distribution Summary Keywords Reply-To

The new 'multitask:' static file option.

Everything else.

==========

Version 1.64

o Change all FORUM lines in the forum configuration files
to DEFAULT lines. Usually these are /waffle/system/local & usenet.

o Add the files /waffle/system/moderate, /waffle/system/unfiles,
/waffle/system/logwarn, and edit as desired.

o Remove the "files_ok" line from the /waffle/system/static file.

o MOST IMPORTANT -- for BBS sysops -- all @access files must be changed
to the new specification. Use /access=1 instead of just '1'.

o Change the "arcview" line in /waffle/extern/_system to read "arclist".

==========

Version 1.63 - IMPORTANT

o Replace your RUN.BAT with the new one. The exit codes
for Waffle *ARE DIFFERENT* than previous versions.

o For each UUCP login account, change the Shell: from "!uushell"
(or similar) to "#exit 40".

the "ADMIN X" command:

admin x uucp

Repeat this for each UUCP type login. This change is necessary
to increase the amount of memory available to the UUCP utilities.

o Replace lines in /waffle/extern/_system; here is an example file:

mail /command="C:\WAFFLE\BIN\RMAIL %i"
news /command="C:\WAFFLE\BIN\RNEWS"
arcview /command="C:\BIN\ARCVIEW %i"
poll /exit=60
shell /command="C:\COMMAND"
command /command="C:\COMMAND /c %i"

In particular the new "RNEWS" and "RMAIL" programs need to be
called instead of the old UUX program. (for DOS)

o Some of the files in the DOCS directory are no longer used.
These can be removed. There are also new files present.

o By default, Waffle is now distributed configured on the C: drive.

o If you want to use the scheduler (CRON), read DOS.DOC and
add the file C:\WAFFLE\SYSTEM\SCHEDULE.

=========

If you're using an even older version, it's truly an antique and you
will probably be better off installing 1.65 from scratch.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
