[] WAFFLE FOR UNIX PRODUCT INFORMATION --

Waffle for UNIX provides a BBS solution for a large number
of Unix flavors. Unix E-Mail and Usenet News are fully supported.

Some of the major features provided by Waffle are:

o Public messages

Public message bases are the core of the BBS system.
These can either be local bases, contained wholly within
Waffle, or shared with Usenet. A wide variety of access
and security restrictions may be applied to each area.

o External commands

Commands that execute Unix programs may be easily
integrated to the system, including shell scripts or
normal binaries. These appear to users as normal commands.

o Support for Usenet and UUCP Mail

Waffle integrates with your existing News and Mail
setup on your Unix system. News articles are kept in
their usual spool directory, no importing of articles or
storage duplication is required.

o Advanced mail features

User to user private E-Mail is kept within Waffle.
Advanced features are included, such as aliases,
forwarding, mail folders, mailing lists, and redirection
to specific programs.

o Administrative tools

Waffle supports many thousands of accounts. Even
20,000 accounts will not cause performance degredation.
Tools are provided to edit accounts, purge old users,
and other administrative functions.

o Security

Great pains are taken to ensure that ordinary remote
users are not permitted to access areas potentially
harmful to the system (such as a remote shell..)

Access to Usenet messages may be granted by "level"
or by group. Also, many privileges may be revoked or
granted on an individual user basis. These same
access techniques may additionally be used with file
transfer areas, external programs, or E-Mail.

Waffle maintains an extensive set of logfiles, which
record all "interesting" system events, in addition
to network and user statistics.

o File transfer section

File transfer section may be used with any protocol.
Any number of file areas are allowed, and support is
included for CD ROM devices. Batch downloads, file find,
new file scan. An archive lister to list the contents
of tar, zip, arc, and other popular formats.

o Support for NNTP

Usenet news may be kept on a remote machine, and
retrieved via NNTP (running above TCP/IP protocol.)
This frees disk space and allows news processing
load to be offset to the remote machine. Waffle is
the only Unix BBS to support NNTP.

o Platforms available

A/UX Apple Macintosh Unix
BSD 4.3 Berkeley Unix
HP/UX Hewlett Packard HP/UX
NeXT NeXT OS
Sun OS Sun Microsystems SunOS
Ultrix DEC Ultrix
Wicat Sys V Wicat's System V
Xenix SCO Xenix, 286 and 386 flavors
386/ix Interactive Systems

o Extensive documentation

About 400K of documentation is included.
Additionally, the source code is well documented.

o Support

Support is available by sending mail to
[email protected]. We will make an honest effort
to answer whatever questions you have. There is no
charge for support, so long as you are nice about it.

You will probably not need all the features listed above.

Those that you don't use are designed to stay out of your
way (for instance, if you don't run a dialup system, you can
still get full use of the system in local mode.)

[] WAFFLE FOR UNIX SOURCE CODE --

If you would like source to the BBS, the registration is $120, or
$200 if you are a corporate or governmental entity. Small businesses
(fewer than a dozen employees) are eligible for the lower rate.

Anyone who has registered the DOS binary version may apply the cost of
binary registration to their DOS or Unix source license, of course.

The source is NOT distributable, but you may modify it to your heart's
content. This is intended to allow sites to modify the source to fit
their own needs. If you've made changes, please let us know and we may
be able to incorporate these for the general good; in this manner you
won't have to worry about reimplementing your individual changes as new
versions are made available.

Preferred methods of distribution are one of: send you 1.2MB or 720K
DOS disks (Note: 360K disks are too small); allow you to download a copy;
or by FTP. Contact us if you have special requirements.

You will receive the latest version, 1.65 or higher.

In case you were wondering, the source looks something like:

[] VERSIONS, UPDATES, AND MODESTY ---

Waffle is actively supported software. New versions are released
when significant features have been added, and the changes have
proven stable.

We've been adding significant features for several years now at
a fairly constant pace, and it doesn't look like this will stop..

We feel that this is a damn good package. Knowing that not
everyone shares our views, we will listen to your groovy comments,
suggestions, complaints, questions, etc. and try to get an answer
or response back to you. You may contact us at the PO Box above,
by electronic mail to the author, , or by
calling the BBS number below.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
