Program : WFS
Author : Larry Hardiman
Location : Sunnyvale, CA USA

Waffle File Server (WFS) provides a means for retrieving files
from a Waffle BBS via electronic mail. WFS operates as a fully
integrated subsystem of MS-DOS Waffle. A command language permits
a requestor to retrieve HELP, a listing of available files, or a
specific file by sending electronic mail to a SysOp defined user
ID on the BBS system. WFS provides security features comparable
to those of interactive Waffle.

WFS interprets messages as they arrive, queuing the interpreted
results for later processing. A session transcript is mailed to
the sender when his message is interpreted. Queued requests are
processed by executing the message server from Waffle's RUN.BAT,
or via the SCHEDULE file.

Rate limiting features provide the SysOp with the ability to
control the amount of file server activity on the BBS. WFS
limits, on a per message basis, the number of bytes requested;
queued requests based on the number of bytes represented by the
files in those requests; the number of bytes mailed per day.
"Obnoxious" users or sites may be locked out of WFS entirely by
controls available to the SysOp.

WFS Release 1.1.2 is fully compatible with Waffle release 1.65's
updated files sub-system. The WFS 1.1.2 distribution contains
MS-DOS binaries, machine readable documentation, sample
configuration files, and support programs.

A program for generating a list of files available via WFS is
provided. The program uses Waffle's DIRS file to list the files
available via WFS.

WFS is ShareWare. Terms are contained in the documentation.

Program : VACATION
Author : Larry Hardiman
Location : Sunnyvale, CA USA

Vacation processes mail files in Waffle's user directories, and
allows users to setup "autoreplies" to let people know they are away.
Vacation may be run from "RUN.BAT" or the SCHEDULE file.

An option is available that causes any user directory containing
a "vacation" file to have the text of that file sent to the
originator of any newly arrived mail for that user. When run without
this option, VACATION merely lists all mail.

Vacation is "freeware".

Program : ASER
Author : Budi Rahardjo
Location : Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

ASER is a mail based archive server, which allows people
to retrieve files through network E-Mail.

Commands understood by ASER include HELP and GET:

help will send 'help' file
get index will send file 'index'

Program : WAFLINE MAIL
Author : Kristopher Nelson
Location : Bothell, WA USA

WaflineMail is a QWK/REP offline mail door that also handles normal
ASCII (text) format and a special "Rnews" format that's compatible
with the Waffle RNEWS.EXE program. An offline maildoor allows you to
download a QWK packet consisting of messages, bulletins, new files
listings, and custom "hello" and "goodbye" screens.

You read this QWK packet with an offline mail reader such as SLMR,
Deluxe2, or WinQWK. Using this offline mail reader, you can read and
reply to messages, without tying up the phone line reading mail
online. Use you favorite text editor or word processor while replying
to messages at your convenience. You can also easily save and print
these messages for future reference. Later, you can call back and
upload your replies.

Program : NETSUM, MAILSUM, and CALLSUM
Author : Vince Skahan
Location : Federal Way, WA USA

NETSUM, MAILSUM, and CALLSUM are utilities to analyze and report
summaries (and details, if so desired) of the \waffle\admin directory
net, mail, and callers files respectively.

NETSUM and MAILSUM are MSDOS programs available in executable form
from the Waffle subdirectory on SIMTEL20 and mirror sites. CALLSUM.PL
is a Perl program (v3.041 or later) program for both DOS and unix
that is currently only available via mail from the author.

For more information regarding any of these programs (and more!),
send mail with the text 'help' to [email protected].

You may use and distribute all three programs without charge.

Program : EXPIRE
Author : mathew
Location : Cambridge, UK

EXPIRE implements time-based expiry of newsgroups. It allows you to set
expiry times on a per-newsgroup basis or via defaults, and is written in C
for maximum speed. The program is shareware, registering gets you mathew's
disk of Waffle utilities; as he writes more, they will appear on the disk and
be made available to all those who have registered.

The registered version of EXPIRE supports multiple newsgroup definition
files, Expires: headers on articles (excellent for news.announce.newusers
and news.answers), the DOS archive bit, log files, and dead newsgroup
detection. It has been optimized for speed, and produces useful statistics
about the volume of news. The shareware version is on SIMTEL20 and
numerous other archive servers; look for EXPIRE10.ZIP.

Program : BNU FOSSIL DRIVER
Author : David Nugent and Unique Computing Pty Limited
Location : Melbourne, Australia

BNU is an asynchronous communications interrupt driver that
runs in the background as a TSR and can be shared among multiple
applications. It can handle up to 4 COM ports concurrently in
up to 16 different configurations. A device driver is also
included that may be loaded from CONFIG.SYS during boot time.

BNU supports the 16550 USART in fully buffered mode, providing
the capability of much higher baud rates, performance and significantly
less CPU overhead especially in multitasking environments.

The BNU driver is extremely FAST, optimised for speed, and takes
up very little memory.

BNU is freely available but copyrighted software, and supplied
no charge to system operators of Fidonet, and Othernet, and
UUCP based systems.

A copy of BNU is distributed (with permission) on Waffle
diskettes, and you may also download a copy from Darkside BBS,
as /files/pc/comm/bnuxxx.zip, or obtain a copy by anonymous
FTP from simtel20.army.mil as PD:BNUxxx.ZIP.

Program : RFILES
Author : Pat Cain
Location : Lower Hutt, New Zealand

RFILES compiles a file listing for the Waffle BBS. The listing
created can be made available for users to download, or can be
used with mail-based archive servers such as ASER or WFS.

The current version (April 1992) is 2.4, compatible with Waffle 1.65.
The main features of RFILES are:

* Create a list of all selected files or new files
* Text strings inside listing are all customisable
* Full control over Waffle's access, group, privilege, password
and hidden file area security options
* Support for CD-ROMS and mail archive servers
* Can include adverts and information for each file area in listing
* Actively supported and upgraded regularly
* RFILES is free, though a postcard to the author is appreciated.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
