This note applies to Waffle DOS systems only.
To use the 16 bit COMPRESS included with this Waffle:

Place the following line in your \WAFFLE\SYSTEM\STATIC file:
compress : -dv

The -i option is not needed with this version of compress.

Replace your COMPRESS.EXE with this file. Save a copy of the 12
bit compress as COMP12.EXE. If you can't get the 16 bit to work,
revert back to the original.

This COMPRESS can unpack 12 or 16 bit news without any extra
configuration, except the line above.

To give someone a 16 bit newsfeed, use the /batch=comp16 flag in
the corresponding FEEDS file entry, AND have a copy of this compress
as COMP16.EXE, in addition to COMPRESS.EXE. (Trust me.)

If you don't have enough memory, you may have to back down
to 12 bit compression. This is particularly true of TSR heavy
machines, or people with less that 640K ram in the machine.

COMPRESS is a memory hog, 16 bit very much so. (This is the
reason why the default Waffle compression is set to 12.)

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
