SUB ATTACK

INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to Sub Attack. This game will attempt to
simulate the complex world of submarine warfare in a
fun and entertaining door game for your BBS or as a
personal arcade game for your IBM/clone computer. You
will be in command of an American Los Angeles class
submarine. You will navigate your ship across the
globe in search of your targets. As your experience
grows so will your ships lethal capacity and range.
You can play against other players and several
different missions. The registered game will allow up
to 26 players and 10 different missions. Sub attack
can effectively animate up to 52 different objects on
any screen even over phone lines with ease and
playability!

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Monitor: CGA or better
Memory: 256K of free memory (maybe less if your lucky)

Hard disk is optional but recommended.

If you are a user playing on a BBS you do not need a color
monitor but you must be able to support and receive ANSI codes.

OBJECT OF THE GAME:

The object of the game is to complete your selected
mission. While it is possible to select "The Milk Run"
you will find it difficult to promote through the ranks
and earn yourself recognition as a true submarine
hunter/killer. You should always keep in mind that
while you are allowed to make life difficult on other
players by attack and inflicting damage on their ships
your primary concern should be completing your mission.
As a safeguard against War Mongers, you will only be
allowed to sink one opponent per logon.

PLAYING THE GAME:

After you select your mission your ship will be
randomly appear somewhere at sea. For example if your
mission is to sink 3 Iraqi tankers (mission #1) you
will first need to find your targets then fire upon
them. This may not be so easy because there are other
warships roaming the seas, some friendly and others
not so friendly. You have the following systems at
hand to help you complete your mission before your time
runs out.

COMMANDS:

O)rders This is the command you enter while in the
game to receive your mission orders. During
long missions it is always a good idea to
refresh your memory should you forget what
your actual mission is! Read them carefully!

S)onar The sonar room is arrayed with all the latest
computer equipment. It is very successful in
identifying the relative size and screw speed
of a surface ship (targets a-z) or other
players (Uppercase A-Z). You can determine
what nationality a ship is by the "footprint"
and the large database on file.... For added
game play you will have to determine using
the relative bar-graph readings, what type of
ship it is however. For Example a Tanker
would be large so probably VESSEL SIZE 8 and
slow speed so SCREWS of about 3-4. Get the
idea. You cannot use sonar on an enemy
stealth submarine "ê" (omega sign).

K)ills This command will give you your current kill
count per ship type for your current game.
This is useful when determining how many more
targets you need to kill to complete your
mission.

R).O.E. This primarily has no effect while playing
the game. This command will determine what
actions your ship will take after you logoff
the game and a different user is playing.
You can preprogram your ship to do 1 of 3
things. 1) Attack any ship that comes near
your ship on sight! 2) Do nothing and don't
provoke attack. If attacked you will try to
escape. 3) Fire only if fired on. Once
again this is what action your sub will take
after you logoff your game. R.O.E. stands
for rules of engagement.

F)ire This is the command you invoke to attack
another target. If your firing CPU is
operational, firing weapons is simple. Your
firing computer is very accurate when
targeting surface ships or other Players (a-z
or A-Z). You cannot use the firing computer
to lock onto a stealth sub ("ê"). You must
attack these targets using manual systems.
If your firing computer is destroyed and or
being repaired then again you must use manual
systems for all firing commands.

Manual Firing Coordinates: To enter a
coordinate you must determine the targets
location on the map using x,y coordinates.
The x coordinate values range from 1 to 58
going left to right. The y coordinate values
range from 1 to 17 counting from top to
bottom of the map. Manual systems may be
difficult to use in the heat of battle so its
a good idea to only attack when your firing
computer is operational. If your computer
was destroyed or disabled have no fear backup
systems exist and repairs begin immediately
on any damaged system. Usually repairs can
be realized in just a few minutes.

U)pdate Status

In order to increase playing speed, all
status variables are not updated all the
time. If you remain on anyone map for a
period of time it is a good idea to
occasionally update your status so that they
are current. Your status is automatically
updated when ever you change maps.

H)elp This command will give the player a little
ON-LINE help if he or she needs it.

R)edraw This command will redraw the screen should
bad line noise occur when playing Sub Attack
as a BBS door game.

C)redits Just a little information about the
development of Sub Attack, News and
registration information.

M)usic ON/OFF

New to version 3.0 and later Sub Attack is capable
of playing music providing your terminal can support
ANSI MUSIC. A fine communications package called
QMODEM (a shareware package from FORBIN Project)
does an excellent job. When the screen say "M)usic ON"
then ansi music is enabled. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY
ANSI MUSIC else nothing but junk will appear on your
screen creating errors. IF you are not sure of your
compatibility toggle this option to OFF by pressing "M".

PLAYING THE GAME (cont)

Once again the object is to complete your mission. If
you do complete your mission you can expect the
following: A promotion in rank (level). Earn enough
promotions and you will receiver a better commission.
The higher the ship class (#) the greater the firepower
and range of your vessel. Some missions will be nearly
impossible to complete with out a "super sub". Earning
such a sub will not be easy but the benefits will out
weigh the hardship and casualties.

Fueling: When ever you move you use up fuel. Even
though your submarine is nuclear powered you must dock
at port for supplies and refueling. Besides it adds to
the play of the game. There are fuel stations
througout the globe. The are signified by the Italic
f, (Ÿ - red in color). Simply bump into this station and
you will receive more fuel for your mission.

SATCOM SUPPORT:

As a commander of a Los Angeles Class Submarine you
have a support system. This is called SATCOM.
Satellite communications (SATCOM) are constantly being
received by your sub. These satcom messages include
valuable information on sightings of surface ships
around the globe. When you receive a satcom message it
is a good idea to write down the information for later
use. Sometimes information on status of a surface ship
is given as well. If you are having trouble locating
your targets the SATCOM can help. Should you ever lose
SATCOM communications due to an attack it will be
repaired in a timely manner.... Like sonar and the
firing CPU usually in just a few minutes.

MISSIONS:

There are several missions you can embark on as
commander of your vessel. If you register this game
you will have more missions available to you. (See
registration instructions REGISTER.DOC).
Providing how well the program is received there may be
more missions that will be made available at a later
date.

It is recommended that you start out with an easy
mission and progress to the next higher. As you
complete each mission you will be awarded 1000 pts
times the mission # you select (Example mission #3 =
3000 pts upon completion). Your ranking against other
players is based on your accumulation of points.

SCORING:

You receive points for completing missions, sinking
renegade stealth subs (red, green, yellow), enemy ships
and players. However you may be docked points for
sinking ships outside your mission objective. Sinking
Civilian Ships are a sure way to lose points no matter
what flay the vessel may be flying.

Well that's about it for now..... I hope this gives you a better
idea what SUB ATTACK is about. I have several ideas I may
include in later revisions so keep your eyes open or call my BBS
and check for the latest releases.

Sincerely,

Rick Salinas

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
