Yes this is another Host or BBS program but it's claim to fame is for
what it does not have. It does not have complex message sections, multiple
libraries, devious routes to find things, or a huge list of user commands,
etc. And it does not require you to be a genius to set it up and use it.
The purpose of this program is to provide you and others with a simple
method of calling your computer when you are busy or away from the office.
Simply copy P2HOST.EXE to some place where it can be found with your
DOS path settings.
Then create a directory called "P2HOST" on a drive of your choice
(even a network drive will do) and copy the following files in to it.
P2HOST.HDR ;opening header, may be changed by you.
P2HOST.MSG ;scratch pad messages, maintained by you.
P2HOST.PAS ;password file for closed system.
Run P2HOST in the directory that you put it in and set the options
for your system.
Option 1. Host Drive & Directory = x:\P2HOST
Set the default drive where you put the P2HOST directory.
Option 2. Comm Port x
Select the Serial Port for your modem.
Option 3. Baud Rate xxxx
Select the normal Baud Rate for your modem.
P2HOST will auto-select 300, 1200 and 2400 when called.
Option 4. Closed System, No
No = No password required, Yes = password required.
If Yes then the file P2HOST.PAS is required.
Option 5. Sysop Password "SYSOP1"
Change this to your own password (case sensitive).
Option 6. Modem Init "xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
Change this ONLY if you have to add commands for your modem.
If you have changed Option 4 to Yes then option 7 will appear.
Option 7. Private User Sections, No
No = User will be restricted to the present directory.
Yes = User will be sent to his own directory (a sub directory
under x:\P2HOST with the same name as his password and he will
also be able to Erase files in that directory).
In the "non private" mode, change to the drive and directory that you
wish the caller to have access to and run P2HOST/A (automatic mode, skips
the config section). The caller will be able to Upload and Download in that
directory only. The caller cannot delete or over-write any files.
In the private mode, the drive and directory selection will be automatic.

If P2Host is now working for you then you are ready for this information.
C = Chat, if a caller is on the system a message telling the caller
that the Host wishes to chat will be sent to the caller.
\ = Terminate CHAT mode. (May be used by either caller or Host).
Q = Quit, if a caller is on the system a message is sent that the
Host wishes to shut down. If no caller is on the system then
this command will exit the program.
Esc = The Escape key Aborts any action on the system and hangs up
the phone. This is the panic button. If you do not have a
modem hooked up, you will have to use "X" to exit P2Host.
Any inactivity by the caller for two minutes will terminate the call.
Commands Available to the Caller:
U = Upload a file using Xmodem protocol.
D = Download a file using Xmodem protocol.
L = List files on the current directory.
C = Request Chat with the Host operator.
R = Read the temporary message buffer.
W = Write to the temporary message buffer.
V = View an Ascii file.
G = Good Bye, Log off from P2Host.
E = Erase file (for authorized users only).
Esc = Change drive or directory (for Sysop only).
The temporary message buffer is just that. It's purpose is so that the
caller may leave a note, for example:
Hi, I got the file. Thanks
Jane, send a copy of LETTER.DOC to all our distributors and when
you finish the new report, leave a copy on the system. I'll call
again about 3:00 pm tomorrow. Bob
Simply use an editor to delete old messages from the P2HOST.MSG file.

The Logon is limited to 6 bytes for the Sysop, and in the "closed" mode
the users are limited to 8 bytes. If not in the "closed mode" any string
up to 6 bytes will be accepted.
The Logon for "Sysop" is case sensitive, for example, "Jasper" is not
the same as "jasper".
If a file (Logon).P2H exists in the x:/P2HOST dir, the file will be sent
to the caller.
For example, if "Fred" logs in, FRED.P2H will be sent to him.
If the "Sysop" password is accepted and a "SYSOP.P2H" exists in the
x:\P2HOST directory then that data will be sent to the caller.
Let's say that you just called in and screwed up your password. If
P2Host is in the "Closed" mode, you will have 2 more tries to get it right.
In the "open" mode Enter "P" and you will get another chance at the password.
If you have "sysop" status, you really don't have much more power other
than that you can change drives and directories. This is another security
measure as it requires your knowledge of your own system. Version 1.1
allows you to Erase files.
Hit "Esc" and the ChDir function will appear.
Either enter a new drive (F:) or a normal CD command (\TEMP).
Even as Sysop you will not be able to replace any files. If a file exist,
you will have to upload with a slightly different file name.
*NEW* Features of Version 1.1, The "closed system" now permits user logons.
And the new structure permits use on a network system. You may now set
the default drive for the P2Host files (x:\P2HOST) and all files needed
by P2Host will default to that directory.
The Sysop and valid users in the "closed system" may now delete files by
using the "E" command for Erase. The users can only erase files in their
If you wish to run a "closed system", A file called P2HOST.PAS must exist
in the x:/P2HOST directory. This file must contain the user password followed
by a space and the user's name. This file may be created with a text editor
and must contain one line of text for each valid user. The password MUST be
in uppercase. Example;
BOBH Bob Holland ;BobH is the password, the rest is who he is.

(password.P2H) files will be sent to these callers. For example BOBH.P2H
will be sent when BobH logs in to the system.

Again, ALL P2Host related files MUST reside in the x:\P2HOST directory
except for P2HOST.EXE. This means that the "header", "messages", "log",
and "passwords" will only be found if they are in x:\P2HOST.
Presently the passwords for the users are not "case sensitive" and the
password in P2HOST.PAS *MUST* be in uppercase to get a match. The password
should not exceed 8 bytes so that directories and message files may be located.
This version also introduces the "Private Section" option. when in the
"Closed System" mode. This option requires a separate sub-directory under
the "P2HOST" directory for each "logon". When the caller "logs on" he will
be restricted to his own directory and cannot access any other areas of the
system except the "messages".
A file called P2HOST.LOG in the x:\P2HOST directory will be created and will
show the caller's logon time and upload or download actions. This file will
allow you to determine what files are new on the system and what files may be
deleted. You must delete or edit the .LOG file to reduce it's size.
The P2HOST.MSG buffer has been expanded and must reside in the x:\P2HOST
directory. This feature will permit callers to leave messages to each
other and must be maintained by the "Sysop".
In the "Open System" mode the "Sysop" may call in and change the default
Drive and Directory for the next caller.
I thought of adding a command to "drop" to Dos, but I feel that it is too
dangerous. First of all, a "watchdog" program would be needed in case the
modem disconnected while you were in dos. Secondly, commands like switching
to an invalid drive or an empty floppy would bring the session to an abrupt
halt. And finally, if someone did discover your password, they would have
full access to your system including delete *.*
