ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Welcome to Maximus!

The version 2.0 distribution kit consists of four parts. Please ensure
that you have all of the files required to install Maximus under your
operating system:

DOS version OS/2 version
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
MAX200-1.LZH MAX200P1.LZH
MAX200-2.LZH MAX200P2.LZH
MAX200-3.LZH MAX200-3.LZH \ MAX200-3 and MAX200-4 are shared
MAX200-4.LZH MAX200-4.LZH / for both DOS and OS/2.

(The archives may have been repacked with ARJ, PAK, ZIP, or some other
archive type.) However, you need all four files before you can begin
the installation.

To install Maximus, you must first unLZH all of the MAX*.LZH files
into a work directory. After everything is extracted, please print
out and read both this file and MAX_OP.PRN. This readme only
contains a few essentials; for a complete guide to installing Max,
you should see the "Installation" section of MAX_OP.PRN.

³ For new Max SysOps ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Once all of the LZH files have been extracted, run the INSTALL
program. INSTALL is a dual-mode program which can be run under either
DOS or OS/2. If you wish to run the OS/2 version of Maximus, you must
run INSTALL from an OS/2 command prompt. Similarly, if you wish to
run the DOS version of Maximus, INSTALL must be run from the DOS
prompt.

INSTALL will ask you a few questions, decompress the *.FIZ archives,
perform the initial system configuration, and then exit to the
operating system. At that point, your system is ready to run in local
mode. Again, for more information on completing the installation,
please see MAX_OP.PRN.

Under permission from Unique Computing Pty, the BNU FOSSIL driver is
included in the Max DOS distribution archive. If you're a new user of
the DOS version, you'll need such a FOSSIL to handle remote callers.
(Other FOSSILs will work, but BNU is one of the fastest.) The
inclusion of BNU in the Maximus archives does not convey any rights to
you; terms of usage for the BNU package is covered separately in
BNU.DOC.

³ For Max 1.02 SysOps ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

If you're upgrading from Max 1.02, please print out and read
CONVERT.PRN before proceeding. This file contains essential
information on performing the upgrade, and you'll miss a lot of new
features without it.

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ For everyone ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

1) If you're using a monochrome monitor, a black-and-white colour
configuration is available. Although the distribution version of
Max looks nice on colour monitors, some features (such as the
pop-up windows) may be unreadable on mono systems. To solve this
problem, after running through the installation program, type "COPY
COLOURS.B&W COLOURS.CTL" at the prompt, and then run SILT. This
tells Max to use colours which are more pleasant on a mono system.

2) Before beginning the installation, you should have at least 4
megabytes of free disk space. The files unpacked from MAX*.LZH
will occupy around 1.5 megs. In additional, 2 megabytes are
required to decompress the *.FIZ files into the appropriate
directories.

After Maximus has been installed, all of the *.FIZ files can be
deleted. The post-installation space requirements are 1.5 megs for
MAX.EXE and supporting files, 800k for documentation, plus space to
hold all of your message bases and file areas.

Finally, DOS users should have at LEAST 400K of free memory before
beginning the installation. Although Maximus itself requires very
little memory (under 164K), the INSTALL program needs a lot of
working space to decompress the .FIZ archives.

3) Before beginning the installation, OS/2 users should read OS2.DOC.

4) Enjoy!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
