Quarterdeck Technical Bulletin # 241
By Quarterdeck Testing & Compatibility
Last revision: June 23, 1992
This is a very general guide to troubleshooting QEMM-386, and provides
either quick fixes or references for additional information. See the appendix
at the end for sources of this additional information.
PRELIMINARIES
If your problems are related to: Get the technote:
Stacker STACKER.TEC
DR-DOS 6 DRDOS6.TEC
Microsoft's "Windows" WIN-TRBL.TEC or WINFLOW.TEC
an IBM PS/1 PS1.TEC
Unrecognized Microchannel Adapter MCA.TEC
Protman.dos (or protman.sys) PROTMAN.TEC
(anyone using LAN Manager, and some using other networks, load this driver)
Keyboard misbehavior IA.TEC
Pathworks/DECNET DECNET.TEC
XGA video XGA.TEC
IBM's PC Support for 5250 AS400.TEC
"Cannot find ROM handler for Int ??" XSTI.TEC
Exception #13 is due to a wide variety of causes, almost all of which are
treated here. If you wish to know more about Exception #13, get the technote
"EXCEPT13.TEC"; for detailed trouble-shooting, get "EX13FLOW.TEC".
If your problem is inappropriate shift states, or getting numbers when
you press the cursor keys, get the technote "IA.TEC".
There is a line in your CONFIG.SYS that reads:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS [parameters]
Steps 1-6 in this technote involve editing the [parameters] on this line, and
nothing else. Every time you change the parameters on this line, you must re-
boot your computer for them to take effect.
1) Remove QEMM-386 by placing the word "rem" before the word "device" on
this line; re-boot. If this does not solve your problem, QEMM-386 is not
the cause. If this does solve your problem, remove the "rem".
2) If there is a Stealth parameter ("ST:M" or "ST:F"), remove it and re-
boot. If this solves your problem, get the technote "STEALTH.TEC" and
follow its instructions.
3) Add the parameter "DB=2" to this line and re-boot. If this solves
your problem, get the technote "BUS-MAST.TEC" for an explanation.
4) Add the parameter "X=A000-FFFF" to this line and re-boot. If this
solves your problem, get the technote "EXCLUDE.TEC" and follow its
instructions.
5) Remove all the parameters on the QEMM386.SYS line and add:
DB=2 DM=128 IA IOTRAP=64 LD NCF NO NOVDS NR NRH NOSH NS NT NTR NX UX ON
then re-boot. If this set of parameters solves your problem, consult the
manual or get the technote "TOUR.TEC" for an explanation of the meaning of
these parameters. All of these parameters, even taken together, do not
seriously handicap the usefulness of QEMM-386. All together, they cause
QEMM-386 to use only 2K more conventional memory, 116K more extended
memory, and will not cause QEMM-386 to be any slower. You can find the
one(s) you need by eliminating them, one at a time.
6) If you are still not working, add the parameter "NOEMS" and re-boot.
If this solves your problem, some program that uses expanded memory user
is probably misbehaving, since this parameter causes QEMM-386 to cease
providing expanded memory. Go to step 7, and check to see if the other
program involved uses EMS.
7) Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT to TEST.BAT, and save your old CONFIG.SYS.
Create a new CONFIG.SYS with just the QEMM-386 line and "FILES=40", then
re-boot. If this solves the problem, restore your old CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT one line at a time to find out what other program seems to
be causing your problem.
8) It is slightly possible that you need more than one of these solutions.
When you have found one, and are still having problems, keep that solution
and start over.
9) Drop Quarterdeck Technical Support a letter or FAX (310-314-3217) to
let us know how you fared. Contact Technical Support (310-392-9701, or
FAX or BBS, etc.) if you still cannot solve your problem. Even if you
have solved your problem, if you do not understand the consequences of the
parameters that were necessary to solve it, contact Quarterdeck Technical
Support. You are now in a much better position to get help quickly.
Technotes may be obtained from the Quarterdeck BBS (310-314-3227), by
calling QFAX (our automated FAX-back service, at 310-314-3214), on Compuserve
(go QUARTERDECK, library 2), or BIX. Many technotes are also available on
large local BBSs, often in "DESQview" or "multitasking" file areas.

Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
