Subject: Running Optimize with DoubleDisk Gold version 6.0.


QEMM-386 AND DoubleDisk GOLD 6.0 GENERAL INFORMATION

1. This troubleshooting guide is designed to help the individual who has
QEMM-386 (or QEMM-50/60 or QRAM) and DoubleDisk Gold version 6.0 installed on
his or her machine, and has run (or wants to run) Optimize.

2. Throughout this document we will refer to QEMM-386. With the exception of
QEMM-386's Stealth feature, the same solutions presented for QEMM-386 will
also apply to users of QEMM-50/60 or QRAM. The Optimize program is the same
for all three products. Note that the Stealth option exists only with
QEMM-386.

3. To avoid confusion, we will refer to COMPRESSED and UNCOMPRESSED drives
whenever possible. The COMPRESSED drive will always be the one that
DoubleDisk creates to hold most of your programs and data. The UNCOMPRESSED
drive will be the smaller BOOT drive.

4. The information below is relevant if the following assumptions are true:

A. You have DoubleDisk Gold version 6.0 and are SWITCHING drive names.
B. You had a ONE partition drive before DoubleDisk was installed.
C. Your DoubleDisk (COMPRESSED) drive is C: (AFTER bootup)
D. Your BOOT (UNCOMPRESSED) drive is D: (AFTER bootup)

The best way to determine which drive is which is to type VOL and at
the DOS prompt. If DoubleDisk is switching drive names and you had only one
partition before installing the program, most likely the C: drive is the
actual COMPRESSED drive. If you type VOL C: you should see the following:

Volume in drive C is DUBLDISK-C0

5. Before you can run Optimize with DoubleDisk you will have to stop
DoubleDisk from switching drive names. This means that you need to make the
UNCOMPRESSED drive the C: drive.

THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS WILL TAKE YOU STEP BY STEP THROUGH
OPTIMIZING WITH DOUBLEDISK GOLD ON YOUR SYSTEM. TO BE SUCCESSFUL,
YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ONE STEP AT A TIME.

BEFORE FOLLOWING THE TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS BELOW, PLEASE FOLLOW
THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO CREATE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISKETTE

To create a bootable floppy, format a floppy disk with the DOS system on it
and copy the following files to it: COMMAND.COM, QEMM386.SYS, DUBLDISK.SYS,
ACTIVATE.EXE, DRVOFF.EXE, CONFIG.SYS, AND AUTOEXEC.BAT.

DUBLDISK.SYS, ACTIVATE.EXE, and DRVOFF.EXE can be found in the \DUBLDISK
directory.

This will now allow you to boot up your DoubleDisk system even if you lose your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the hard disk.

OPTIMIZE WITH QEMM-386 AND DOUBLEDISK GOLD

In order to run QEMM-386's Optimize program with DoubleDisk, if DoubleDisk is
performing a switch of drive names, a bit of preparation must first be
completed. Unless this preparation is done correctly, Optimize will not
complete successfully.

If you have NOT already attempted to run Optimize, you may skip to Step # 5.

1. If you have already attempted to run Optimize, most likely you no longer
have access to your COMPRESSED DoubleDisk drive. Even though your machine
boots up to a C: prompt, if you look at the contents of the drive it will
appear that you only have a small number of your files resident. Also, it
will appear that the total capacity of your hard drive is only about 2
megabytes. THIS IS NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT.

2. On the C: drive, simply type the following:

COPY C:\CONFIG.DBL CONFIG.SYS
COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.DBL AUTOEXEC.BAT

3. After completing the above, reboot your computer. At some point during
the boot process, you will see the following:

C:\> C:\DUBLDISK\ACTIVATE.EXE A C0=D , S C:=D
File: C:\DUBLDISK.000 Activated as disk D:
Drive letters C: and D: have been interchanged.
DoubleDisk has detected changes in the following files:
* CONFIG.SYS
* AUTOEXEC.BAT
Would you like to update the file(s)? (Y)es/(N)o

MAKE SURE THAT YOU SELECT "N" FOR NO.

4. Once you get back to the C: prompt, the first thing you will want to do is
make sure that the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files are the same on both
the COMPRESSED and UNCOMPRESSED drives. The C: drive at this point should be
your COMPRESSED drive. To determine this, just type: VOL at the C:
prompt. You should see the following: "Volume in drive C: is DUBLDISK-C0" or
something close to it.

Look at the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the D: drive. These should
be the GOOD ones. The two files should look like they did before you ran
Optimize. In contrast, if you looked at the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the C:
drive, it should have only a single line in it that reads:
"@C:\QEMM\OPT2.BAT." If this is the case, just copy the CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files from D: to C: by typing:

COPY D:\CONFIG.SYS C:\CONFIG.SYS
COPY D:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

Reboot your computer. You should now be back to a normal system.

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET RUN OPTIMIZE, PLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW.

5. The next thing you need to do is make sure that QEMM-386 is installed on
both the UNCOMPRESSED and COMPRESSED drives. If you had installed DoubleDisk
AFTER installing QEMM-386, DoubleDisk will create a QEMM directory on both
drives and copy some files over.

If you installed QEMM-386 AFTER installing DoubleDisk, you will need to create
a QEMM directory on the D: drive after installing on C:. After creating the
directory on D:, simply copy the QEMM-386 files from C:\QEMM to D:\QEMM. If
you don't have room to copy over every QEMM-386 file from C:, below is a list
of the most important files.

QEMM386.SYS TESTBIOS.COM
OPTIMIZE.COM RSTRCFG.SYS
LOADHI.SYS MCA.ADL (if a microchannel machine),
LOADHI.COM WINHIRAM.VXD
MFT.EXE WINSTLTH.VXD


6. In order to run Optimize with DoubleDisk, you must disable DoubleDisk's
drive SWITCHING which is done from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When DoubleDisk is
installed on your system it puts the following line as the FIRST line in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

C:\DUBLDISK\ACTIVATE.EXE A C0=D ,S C:=D

The parameter that performs the drive SWITCHING function is at the end of the
line: ",S C:=D."

7. To set up your system so that you may run Optimize, you will only need to
edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, not your CONFIG.SYS file. Below is a sample
AUTOEXEC.BAT file with DoubleDisk installed.

C:\DUBLDISK\ACTIVATE.EXE A C0=D , S C:=D
D:\DUBLDISK\DRVOFF.EXE
PROMPT=$P$G
PATH=D:\DUBLDISK;C:\DOS;C:\QEMM

** IMPORTANT **
It is important that you follow the instructions below,
to the letter, in order to insure success.

8. Remove the ", S C:=D" parameter from the first line so that it now reads:

C:\DUBLDISK\ACTIVATE.EXE A C0=D

9. Reverse ALL drive designations from the first line down. Do NOT reverse
drive designations in the FIRST line. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file should now look
like this:

C:\DUBLDISK\ACTIVATE.EXE A C0=D
C:\DUBLDISK\DRVOFF.EXE
PROMPT=$P$G
PATH=C:\DUBLDISK;D:\DOS;D:\QEMM

Notice the difference between the two samples above. We have changed ALL C:
entries to D: and vice versa.

10. Now, copy the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to D: and then reboot the machine. Once
the reboot is complete, you should no longer be switching drives. This means
that your C: drive is your UNCOMPRESSED drive and this is the drive from which
QEMM-386 boots. Just to make sure, type VOL D: . This should reveal
the D: drive as DUBLDISK-C0. If this is not the case, check your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file and make sure you have removed the SWITCHING parameter above.

11. Run Optimize. Once Optimize is complete, edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and
reverse your earlier procedures. That is, put back the SWITCHING parameter
", S C:=D" and reverse the drive designations below the FIRST line. If you
decide that you no longer want to SWITCH drive names upon bootup, you do not
have to do anything. Just keep in mind that most of your programs will be on
the D: drive.

12. That's it! You have successfully run OPTIMIZE with DoubleDisk.
